Steer your kitchen design in the right direction with
this practical primer, then check off each task as your
project gets underway.
A FEW WEEKS BEFORE...
CHOOSE WISELY
Make those decisions about style,
palette, appliances, fixtures and materials.
Have alternate choices in case items are
discontinued or unavailable.
FINALIZE THE PLAN
Determine your layout / floor plan
including details like added storage
and lighting, then set the date for day
one of renovation.
DAYS BEFORE AND DURING...
PACK IT AWAY
Pack up, label and store the
contents of your kitchen and set up a
make-shift cooking / clean-up area. Or,
make arrangements to live elsewhere
until construction is complete.
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Be prepared to make countless
decisionsbig and small. The more
comfortable you are with your chosen
design, the easier those decisions will be.

A FEW MONTHS BEFORE...
TAKE STOCK & TAKE NOTES
Look around your kitchen: What do you like? Dislike?
How much time do you spend cooking and hanging out here?
Do you have a large family? Does the room require more space?
These answers will help you create a more personalized plan.
GET INSPIRED
Immerse in magazines, books, web sites and showrooms
find out what truly inspires you. Start a portfolio of what you
like and where to buy so everything is at your fingertips.
BUDGET TIME & MONEY
Complicated renovations will take more time and money
than a cosmetic facelift, but even the smallest jobs should
have a price and timeframe attached to avoid surprises.
GATHER THE TROOPS
For those embarking on a DIY effort, start gathering
resourcestools, weekend volunteers, how-to guides.
Meticulous planning and preparation will pave the way
for a smooth project.
HIRE THE HELP
If youre enlisting the help of pros, research and
interview candidates, then hire your favorites committing
all details and a timeframe to an agreed-upon contract.

When form meets function, great design happens.
The flow of your kitchen should be determined by
the rooms layout, how you use your space and what
you want to accentuate. Take into consideration
the following:
Whatever your layout may be, pay attention to the work
triangle or the distance between your cooking surface,
fridge and sink.
Ideally, each leg of the triangle should be at least 4 feet
and no longer than 9 feet for optimal flow.
While some designers are not as strict about this spatial
relationship, most agree that the legs of the triangle should
not be interrupted by furniture or traffic.
Island work stations are fitting for larger kitchens and offer
additional seating for casual dining.
Islands and peninsulas can be strategically placed to separate
different areas of the kitcheneven act as dividers between
roomsfor an airy, more open flow.
Establish task areas and equip them with the space, lighting
and tools needed for fast efficiency.
Once youve got a sketch of your layout, get ready to
start filling it in with the appliances, fixtures, cabinetry
and furnishings to bring it all together.

For complex jobs or those requiring an expert touch,
turn to the pros for help. These professionals can advise
on space planning, layouts and design configurations
and will work with you to draft blueprints for the finished
design. As an added bonus, many will deal with zoning
applications and variance requirements, working directly
with planning officials to obtain the proper permits.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR TEAM
When hiring professional help, apply the following
guidelines to find just the right fit.

RESEARCH YOUR OPTIONS
Ask for recommendations from friends, family, neighbors,
your local chamber of commerce and design centers. Then,
cross check each candidate with the better business bureau
to ensure a clean track record.

NARROW THE FIELD
Interview a few different candidates before making a
final decision.

OBSERVE THE BASICS
Look for individuals who are problem solvers, open to input
and work well with others.

GET THE GOODS
Ask to see licenses, proof of insurance and referrals from
previous clients. Good contractors will be happy to provide
proof of their quality services.

GET IT ON PAPER
Understand everything youre committing to in terms of costs
and construction time. For large jobs, have a lawyer review
contracts before signing.

Kitchen styles can range from the cool austere of a
modern design to the warm, sun-baked look of the farm
style. Whatever your personal choice may be, keep
these tips in mind to create something truly unique
and absolutely in style.

LOOK BACK
Find inspiration in a different erafabrics
from the fifties or an art deco clock perhaps
then pepper in accents from that time through-
out your kitchen.
07

SPACE OUT
Create a sense of space by eliminating extra
cabinets. Consider a built-in pantry or open
shelves instead.
08

CHOOSE TOPS THAT POP
Mix up your surfaces to add interesttop an
island with butcher block or make it marble if
youre a baker.
09

stainless steel, glass mosaicsfor even more
personalized appeal.
10

LIGHTEN UP
Bring in the light by keeping window treatments
sheer, overhead lighting ample and adding task
lights to dark corners.
01

UNIFY WITH CABINET COLOR

Because cabinetry is the main source of color
in many kitchens, use them to centralize your
palette, dialing the intensity up or down
depending on your design.
02

THROW A RUG (OR TWO!)
Wood floors adorned with throw rugs are a
fantastic way to add warmth and personality
to the room. Use the highest quality polyure-
thane available and invest in an extra top coat
to ensure longevity in this high traffic area.
03

INTEGRATE APPLIANCES

appliances with hidden controls, one piece
doors, customized hardware and trim options.
04

seasonal fruits, veggies or herbs.
05

ADD DASH

for the unexpected, you can get through your kitchen
remodel with your budgetand sanityin tact.
01

KNOW THE NUMBERS

Although costs vary widely from project to project, the following breakdown can
help you ballpark how and where your money will be spent. In general, plan on
spending:
25-30% of your budget on labor
25-30% of your budget for structural and mechanical updates
