Logical Model Version 1.0
Introduction
The logical data model is a more detailed version
of the dimensional data model. Attributes that are depicted in a general
fashion by the dimensional model are addressed in depth by the logical
model. For example, staff is now broken out into staff last name,
staff first name and staff middle initial.
Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams are used
to illustrate the data structures found in the dimensional model. This
diagram style highlights key logical relationships between data items
and easily translates to the database environment.
The logical data model is the template for
the physical data model, which contains the actual table and field names
needed to implement the model to a database. Although the attribute/field
and entity/table names may differ somewhat between the two models due
to naming standards, the meanings will be the same.
The models shown in this document were generated
using Microsoft® Visio® 2000 Enterprise. The data modeling capabilities
of this application permit the development of the physical model from
the logical model. It also has the capability to generate DDL (Data
Definition Language) directly from the data model, thus facilitating
database structure creation and maintenance.
Model Standards and Conventions
The size and complexity of the modeling task
dictate that naming standards be developed and employed throughout the
project. Standards that closely resemble physical modeling standards
will be applied to the logical model. Differences between the two sets
of standards will be noted where appropriate. Where possible, table
and attribute names should be the same in both the logical and physical
models.
