There are several options for connecting a PC laptop. We recommend using a Grameen EDGE device.
Option 1 Grameen EDGE device
1.
Purchase an EDGE wireless internet device. In Dhaka, you can try looking in a Grameen store, or in mobile phone/accessory
shops. There is a variety of such shops in Motijheel. These devices seem to be sold out/out of stock around the city, so getting
one may be difficult.
2.
Use the disc packaged with the EDGE device to install the appropriate software. Follow the instructions that are given.

Option 2 Use Phone as Modem - Grameen
1.
Get a mobile phone with a built-in modem. We are using a Nokia 6680. There are several models from several
manufacturers that have this feature.
2.

Option 3 Use Phone as Modem CityCell ZOOM
Citycell is another service provider which offers internet through a mobile phone/modem. Citycell is on a CDMA network, which
means that it is not compatible with GSM phones, which are most common, internationally. (They also have a device similar to the
EDGE, but it is often sold out.)
1.
Go to a Citycell store/Customer Service office. We got ours set up at the office close to Gulshan 1 (a large
circle/intersection in the Gulshan neighborhood of Dhaka). Its easiest if they help you with most of the setup.
2.
Decide whether you want the phone modem or wireless device internet option. The wireless devices are often out of stock.
The phone that they offer is a Huawei C5320. The phone is Tk. 7200, and the connection fee is Tk. 1000. (When you are
not connected, you can use this phone as a regular mobile phone.)
3.
Select which billing option you want. (E.g. 1 GB of monthly browsing for Tk. 1000, with overage billed at Tk.
0.50/kilobyte.) ZOOM service is only post
post
post
post----paid

paid, which means you need to have a monthly bill mailed somewhere. The
upside is that you can check your statements online, thus negating the need to really physically receive the statements. You
can list your address as:
<Your Name>
Hands On Disaster Response
c/o Mr. Abul Hossain
C&B Road
Rayenda Bazar
Sharankhola, Bagerhat
4.
Install the software that accompanies the phone. Follow the instructions that are given.
5.
Connect the phone to your laptop with the included USB cable.
6.
Set up the phone to act as a modem. Menu->Settings->Phone Mode, right click to Data Service. Click Activate and Yes.
(Note: Activate will not appear if the phone is not connected to your laptop.)
7.
Set up a dial-up connection for ZOOM using your computers Network Connections.
8.
After entering username and password, click connect and start browsing!
