Simple & Reliable Solutions
Functional performance is assured by
using the simplest and most reliable
solutions. Roll support uses air shafts
to allow different roll widths to be loaded
simultaneously to speed-up make ready.
The Z-1500 is a true flat floor installation
with an integrated electric hoist which
can also provide roll weighing.
The vertical nested festoon design is
the industry performance reference.
It is a model of simplicity with very few
parts and easy to access. The splice
head, braking and acceleration system
combine the same attributes to provide
reliable performance, fewer components
and reduces maintenance costs. Ease of
use and ergonomic efficiency are integral
features to help attain high productivity
and safety.
The performance and reliability of
MEGTEC zero speed splicers are based
on technology developed during 35
years of experience from over 15,000
installations. The Z-1500 models combine
proven productivity, rugged construction
with extremely good value for a lifetime
of reliability.
Configuration Choice
The Z-1500 is available in several configurations
to ideally suit varying needs:
Vertical Roll-over-Roll model provides
a compact solution for single webs.
Center loading Roll-over-Roll provides
the most efficient and compact zero
speed configuration available for 2-web
applications.
The innovative horizontal Roll-beside-
Roll model provides easy loading for
single web presses but retains the
positive attributes of a vertical festoon.
Exemplary Splicing
Zero speed splicing provides 99% or
higher splice reliability.
The rolling nip splice head combines
ease of use with high reliability on all
types and weights of paper. The vacuum
splice preparation bar eliminates the
risk of cutting into the nip roller and the
pneumatic nip lock allows the operator to
position the splice more precisely to allow
reduced tail length.
There is a choice of either standard
overlapped splice with short tail, or an
overlap with a secured tail for sensitive
sheeter and folder production. No
minimum roll diameter for loading and
splicing provides complete flexibility to
run part rolls without special handling or
re-winding.
The Ultimate Festoon
MEGTECs vertical nested festoon
design is the most reliable and efficient
available.
The air loaded operation is simpler, with
less maintenance and easier operation
than those with motors, clutch drives or
counter weights. It is equipped for easy-
web-up and in the event of a web break
there is good access to remove paper from
the festoon. Web tension is particularly

stable due to the minimal friction and
inertia of the festoon rollers, which are
maintained at a low position during
normal running to decrease paper length
and tension oscillations in the festoon
wrinkles. Festoon rollers are available in
either uniform or tapered profiles to self-
center the web.
Easy Roll Loading
The splicer holds two full size rolls on air
shafts which reduce make-ready time by
allowing different roll widths to be loaded
simultaneously (shafts are equipped with
indicators to easily position rolls laterally).
The air shafts are automatically coupled
and centered with the motorized sidelay
(a range of shaft handling options are
available to provide ergonomic operation
and eliminate shaft damage).
An integrated electric hoist directly loads
rolls to both positions and its safety
features include positive locking and hoist
hook deflectors (to lock out hoist access
when the shaft is coupled). Removing a
heavy unfinished roll is easily performed
by the hoist.
Splicers can be installed inline or at right
angles. Rolls can be loaded from one side
so the splicer can be installed against
a wall. The Z-1500 model provides
ergonomic roll loading for single webs
and compact center loading for 2-web
applications.
Tension & Control
Stable web tension with minimum variation
is assured from the vertical nested festoon
with dancer air regulation, dancer down
running and core brakes controlled by a
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), an
operator interface panel. Pneumatic dual
disc high torque brakes ensure optimum
operation and low maintenance; they are
ventilated and mounted on the splicer
in-line with each roll shaft for maximum
efficiency. Acceleration is assured by
highly reliable pull rollers. The PLC
controls the splice cycle operation and
continuously monitors the roll to maintain
optimum web tension and brake setting.
High Reliability
The extremely solid manufacture and
simple mechanical layout features
a minimum number of motors and long life
parts. Most components are grouped on
the operator side for easy access.
The design minimizes both maintenance
and adjustments to almost eliminate
down-time.
Ergonomic Efficiency
The Z-1500 provides plenty of room for the
operator to work comfortably and therefore
efficiently and safely. Roll loading, splice
preparation and maintenance are all
operator friendly. The electric hoist and
traverse provide easy loading and an
optional shaft handler eliminates all
physical effort. Motorized sidelay, shaft
coupling and uncoupling eliminate other
manual tasks.
Flexibility
Rolls can be unwound in both
directions
Different roll widths can be loaded
simultaneously
No minimum roll size for loading and
splicing
Choice of overlapped splice with tail, or
overlapped splice with secured tail
Splices papers from bible stock to
heavy weight coated
Deformed rolls can be spliced with
higher reliability
Flat floor installation without pit
Roll shaft cart is a simple and inexpensive
solution for shaft and butt roll handling
Effortless shaft arm handling option lifts
butt rolls and shafts up to 200 lbs (90 daN)
to eliminate physical effort and risk of shaft
damage
