2. General
Please read and take note of these operating instructions before unpacking and
putting the unit into service, and follow the instructions precisely as described herein.
The devices are only to be used, maintained and serviced by persons familiar with
these operating instructions and with the prevailing regulation applying to procedural
safety and the prevention of accidents.
3. Regulated usage
The Model TBS is to be installed as specified. Any usage that exceeds the
specifications should not be considered. Any resulting damages are not the
responsibility of the manufacturer, thus the user assumes all risk for such usage.
4. Operating Principle
Bi-metal temperature switches are used for temperature monitoring and control.
They are notable for their reliability and long service life. The TBS series operates on
the bi-metal principle. A contact made of two dissimilar metals expands and
contracts at different rates as process temperature changes, causing movement of
the contact. The design is such that the contact separates when process
temperature reaches a pre-determined temperature setpoint. The contact then re-
closes when temperature drops back below the setpoint. This method of
temperature monitoring is widely used and results in a very repeatable temperature
setpoint. Model TBS switches are supplied in sturdy brass or Stainless Steel
housings with female threads (1/4" to 1-1/2) on each side as well as a 1.5 m
silicone rubber insulated cable. They are thus suitable for use in rough service
applications.
The temperature contacts (N/C type) have a fixed switching point (for 10°C to 50°C
in 5°C intervals; for 50°C to 100°C in 10°C intervals)
Application
Model TBS thermal reed switches can be used in any application requiring
monitoring or control of temperature in pipes.

5. Instrument Inspection
These devices are checked before dispatch and sent away in perfect condition.
Should the damage to a device be visible, we recommend a thorough inspection of
the delivery packing. In case of damage, please inform your parcel service/
forwarding agent immediately, since they are responsible for damages during transit.

6. Mechanical Connection
The threaded joint between the switch fitting and piping must be sealed with suitable
thread sealing material such as Teflon tape.
No upstream or downstream straight piping runs are required.
Note: Check your system operating parameters to ensure the TBSs maximum
ratings of pressure and temperature are not exceeded.

11. Cautionary Information
Caution
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING GENERAL FLOW METER /
MONITOR WARNINGS BEFORE ATTEMPTING INSTALLATION OF
YOUR NEW DEVICE. FAILURE TO HEED THE INFORMATION
HEREIN MAY RESULT IN EQUIPMENT FAILURE AND POSSIBLE
SUBSEQUENT PERSONAL INJURY.
KOBOLD manufactures a wide range of process sensors and technologies.
While each of these technologies are designed to operate in a wide variety of
applications, it is the users responsibility to select a technology that is
appropriate for the application, to install it properly, to perform tests of the
installed system, and to maintain all components. The failure to do so could
result in property damage or serious injury.
Inspect instrument for damage upon arrival. Cracked, fractured, bent, or
otherwise damaged instruments must not be put into use, since the device is
weakened to an unknown extent.
Make sure that the model that you have selected is chemically compatible with
the application liquids. While the meter is liquid and spray resistant when
installed properly, it is not to be immersed.
The maximum tolerances of the device have been determined using water, air
and/or oil. If using other media, especially corrosive ones, it is critically
important that the user determine chemical compatibility with our instruments.
KOBOLD Instruments Inc. cannot accept responsibility for failure and
consequences resulting from use of media other than water, mineral oil, air, and
nitrogen. Under NO circumstances must the maximum tolerances (temperature
and pressure) be exceeded.
Install the devices in a fully supported position within your flow system. This
avoids excessive stresses that may damage the instrument. In particular:
a. Ensure that the plumbing leading to and from the instrument is fully
supported and that the instrument does not perform the physical function
of a joint.
b. When calculating stress on the device caused by plumbing, the weight of
the medium in the pipes must be considered as well.
c. Misaligned runs of rigid piping can cause large stresses when connected
to the instrument. Do not connect in such a fashion.

During installation, avoid stresses on the instrument by following guidelines
given below:
a. When connecting fittings, hold the instrument fittings rigid with a correctly
sized wrench. Do not install by
