This "C" engraved revolver shows nonfluted cylinder, originally shipped in July 1979, and remains in very good to excellent original condition showing no dragline or muzzle wear, complete in fitted Colt case with all associated paperwork. Est.: $2,000 $4,000. 1240. Needham conversion of Model 1861/63 musket, marked "Norfolk", NSNV, sideplate dated 1863, with sideways trapdoor conversion. Musket remains in overall good condition showing silvery brown patina to metal parts, filled ramrod slot, pewter end cap, and standard Model 1861 buttplate. (Refer Flayderman's #9A278.) This Carbine was one of the notorious Hall Carbine Affair involving John Fremont and financier J.P. Morgan. The Carbines were purchased from the New York Arsenal for $3.50 and were resold to U.S. forces under John Fremont after being rifled by W.W. Marston for the then staggering sum of $22 each. These Carbines were shipped to Fremont at St. Louis, and many were carried West on his California expedition. Carbine remains in original very good condition showing 30%40% original brown drifting to patina, traces of quenched case hardened colors on breech, slight to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting, with slightly heavier pitting on the breechblock; stock is very good with an outline of cartouche showing on both sides of stock behind the breech, minor storage type marks and nicks, but generally very good overall; Carbine shows a "JH" inspection mark behind the rear sight and retains its original ramrod. This Kentucky type rifle was purported to have been in the Joe Foss collection for many years up until his death. Joe Foss shot down over 25 Japanese planes and won the Congressional Medal of Honor.
