ALICE, Texas (AP) The
allegations could bring down
the mayor of this South Texas
town: a faked death, an at-
tempt to hide the evidence
from police, a cover-up story.
And for what? A Shih Tzu.
Mayor Grace Saenz-Lopez
was indicted Friday on two fel-
ony counts of tampering with
physical evidence related to a
dog her neighbors say she
took from them.
She loves the little dog,
said attorney Homero Ca-
nales, who represents the
mayor and her twin sister,
who was also charged. She
told me that if she were a sin-
gle woman, she would not
care if she went to jail for the
rest of her life before she
would give the dog back.
According to the Corpus
Christi Caller-Times and the
San Antonio Express-News,
Saenz-Lopez had agreed to
take care of Puddles while Ru-
dy Gutierrez and Shelly Cava-
zos were on vacation over the
summer. A day after they left,
she called to say the dog was
dead, but three months later a
relative of Cavazos saw Pud-
dles renamed Panchito
at a dog groomers.
Puddles family sued and
filed a criminal complaint, but
the case took a new turn Mon-
day when the mayor filed a po-
lice report saying the dog was
missing.
A television crew found the
dog 10 miles from Alice in Ben
Bolt, at the home of Saenz-Lo-
pezs twin, Graciela Garcia.
Garcia said a mysterious la-
dy had found the dog and
dropped it off.
Garcia was indicted on a fel-
ony count of concealing evi-
dence, said District Attorney
Joe Frank Garza. She and the
mayor have been released on
bond.
A hearing is set for Feb. 4 in
the lawsuit against Saenz-Lo-
pez,
where
state
District
Judge Richard Terrell will de-
cide the custody battle over
the dog, said DeeAnn Torres,
the attorney for Gutierrez and
Cavazos.
We just wanted the puppy
back, Torres said.
The taking of the dog was
to save it from certain death,
said Canales, who is keeping
the dog at his office.
Convictions on the felonies
would cost Saenz-Lopez her
office, City Manager Albert
Uresti said.
She could lose it sooner; a
recall effort is under way.

The pending deployment
of the three to Iraq under-
scored for them the oppor-
tunity to get their citizen-
ship on the fast track. Initial
headquarters elements of
Oklahomas 45th are de-
ploying over the next few
days to their pending mis-
sion in Baghdad, Iraq. After
a farewell formation Sun-
day, the unit will begin ship-
ping its soldiers first to Ku-
wait for processing, then to
Baghdads
International
Zone (formerly known as
the Green Zone).
There, the unit will work
to transition security for the
zone over to Iraqi units. The
mission has been described
by Brig. Gen. Myles Deer-
ing,
commander
of
the
Thunderbirds, as a bridge
from the surge to full Iraqi
control.
Deering said intensive
training in isolation at Camp
MacGregor, N.M., near El
Paso, Texas, has prepared
the unit for its mission, but
now the soldiers are antsy
to begin.
We are ready for this
part to be over and to move
on to the next, he said.
This is the formalization of
the completion of our train-
ing and the validation.
Deering described the
upcoming mission in the
heart of Baghdad as part of
the effort to transition the
International Zone over to
Iraqi control.
We will be working to-
ward the transition, Deer-
ing said. It will involve not
only U.S. forces but coali-
tion forces and the Iraqi
government and Iraqi forc-
es.
The mission cant come
soon enough for Wilson,
who said he, like Ngot-
ngamwong, chose to be-
come a citizen on the eve of
his deployment.
I just wanted to be de-
ployed as a citizen. Also, its
an election year and I want-
ed to vote, he said.
For Hotonu-Oyerinde, cit-
izenship provides a boost to
his feelings about serving.
I was already wanting to
fight for the country. But
this gives that more effort,
Hotonu-Oyerinde said.
James Spurling, an officer
with the Department of
Homeland Securitys U.S.
Citizenship and Immigra-
tion Services, said in the
case of the 45ths three sol-
diers, their application prob-
ably sets a record.
Spurling said members of
the 45th pleaded on behalf
of the men to U.S. Sen. Jim
Inhofe, R-Okla., and U.S.
Rep. Mary Fallin, R-Okla.,
for help.
Seventy-two hours after I
submitted it, I had the re-
sults sitting on my desk,
Spurling said. A guy at the
Nebraska service center
found their applications in
the middle of 10,000 others,
and
shepherded
them
through the process, Spurl-
ing said. Although we ex-
pedite all military applica-
tions,
expedited
usually
means 90 days.
Staff Sgt. Mack Sasser, an
intelligence analyst with the
45th, said he worked with
two of the soldiers, Ngot-
ngamwong and Wilson, and
brought in Hotonu-Oyer-
inde after hearing about his
case. He said he put in calls
to Fallins and Inhofes offic-
es about the soldiers and
walked through a lot of their
paperwork on the military
side.
They told me no way it
would be available quicker
than 30 days, Sasser said.
Its been a big, emotional
roller coaster ride at times.
It was fun.
