Information for Broadening Your Knowledge of Fire Origin and Cause
by Jack L. Sanderson, Editor
Come June 1, 2006, Fire Findings
will be in its new home. For the first
time ever, we are combining offices,
testing and research facilities and our
in-lab seminar site under one roof.
The new 6,000-square foot building
in Benton Harbor, Michigan, will have
something for everyone (Figure 1). As
a Fire Findings reader, youll notice
a fresh focus on testing. We have
always provided you with the results
of unique tests we conduct, but weve
been fairly limited in our setups due to
lack of space. Were looking forward to
developing new ideas in this arena and

training programs for nearly 16 years
and the fall 2006 sessions will be held
in our new building October 10-13 and

Those of you who have attended a
session or two in the past will welcome
the chance to return for other small
conferences covering different topics
(Figure 2). In fact, first up is a dryer
fire symposium for experts who are
really interested in getting to the
bottom of dryer fires. Please call us at
(269) 925-2200 or send an e-mail to
info@firefindings.com if you want to
be placed on our priority mailing list.
Other topics will follow it and we hope
to meet you in our new locale.
In addition to being able to
accommodate slightly larger groups,
well have more room to incorporate
the tremendous number of artifacts
weve accumulated over the years into
our seminar demonstrations. Well also
have space for more demonstrations
weve created since we started
conducting the seminars long ago. For
those of you with some background in
theater production, you know just how
much everyone will appreciate a better
and bigger staging area.
We are not creating a theater-style
auditorium, however. When you attend
a session, youll still be learning in a
laboratory setting thats used most days
for product examinations and testing
related to our casework. And, because
many of the thousands of attendees
have told us over the years that they
like a smaller-group setting, we asked
our architect to design a lab space
that houses around 40 people. Bigger
washrooms and even a kitchen make it
the perfect place for hosting groups.
Fire Findings will also be in a
position to do something weve only
been able to do sporadically the past
few years: coordinate tailor-made
conferences for groups interested in
off-site training opportunities designed
specifically for their needs. Insurance-
company subrogation specialists in
particular already have found Fire
Findings an excellent place to hold
their off-site meetings: They can
conduct their meetings and have us
answer questions, demonstrate failures
and assist them with their subrogation
efforts. A few such sessions are
already on the calendar for 2006 and
2007, so its not too early to consider
a custom seminar for your employees,
department members or organization.
Increased ability for product
testing and examinations
The new laboratory also means we
have the ability to welcome you as
clients. Over the years, weve rarely
mentioned our investigation business
in Fire Findings and outside this story
you wont find us writing about that
part of our business in such a fashion
again. In this one instance, we thought
youd want to know how all these
changes could benefit you, as well.
For instance, you may be involved
in cases that require you take products
from a scene and have someone else
examine them more closely. Were
in an ideal position to assist with the
testing. (We do this now but have never
announced we have the capability.)
Because of our strong research
background and ability to conduct
useful experiments, you may want to
consider sending items to us for testing
or even think about holding some
of your product examinations at our
facility. Weve made a big investment
in fully equipping a lab environment
over the years and, more likely than
not, we can accommodate your needs.
We can also assist in the preparation
of protocols for examinations and
documenting examinations at our site
using digital, still, video and micro-
photography. Expanded lab space also
means we are in a position to re-
create or experiment with fire-causing
scenarios for cases that require your
deposition or trial testimony.
Why undertake all this now? Over
the past 15 years with seminars and
14 years with our publication, weve
learned a tremendous amount about
how products work, how they fail and
how they cause fires. We enjoy passing
along the knowledge to our readers and
students and our new building gives us
the right environment to conduct more
training sessions than weve ever had
an opportunity to do before.
Investigators who have attended our
classes like the hands-on approach and
well be able to do even more of that
in our lab with activities you just cant
do in a hotel conference room. Its also
an opportunity to give back to the fire
investigation industry with a first-rate
facility for examinations, seminars and
testing for the publication.
Figure 2. The new
area for laboratory
examinations will also
double as space for
group training when
Fire Findings hosts
custom seminars and
small conferences. If
you need a neutral
site for your lab exams,
consider talking to us
about renting our space
and equipment.
