MOSFET and IGBT Drivers for Lighting, White Goods and Industrial ...
nductor has expanded
its MOSFET driver portfolio with the
introduction of four new devices - the
MOSFET and IGBT Drivers for Lighting, White Goods and
Industrial Applications
NCP5106, NCP5104, NCP5111 and
NCP5304. These new power gate drivers
target low- to mid-power applications
and can be used in end products such
as white goods, lighting ballasts, and
industrial applications such as motor
control.
The new high voltage, high-side and
low-side drivers are specified over a wide
temperature range -40 degrees Celsius
(°C) < TJ < 125°C, and can operate with
an input voltage up to 600 volts (V), easing
time and effort of design. All the devices
feature a dV/dt immunity of 50 volts per
nanosecond (V/ns) and are 3.3 V and 5 V
input logic compatible. These devices use
the bootstrap technique to ensure a proper
drive of the high-side power switch and
provide rugged design.
The NCP5104, NCP5106B, NCP5111,
NCP5304 are high voltage power gate
drivers that provide two outputs for direct
drive of two N-channel power MOSFETs
or IGBTs arranged in a half-bridge
configuration. The NCP5106A can be
used in any other high-side plus low-side
configuration.
Offered in both SOIC-8 and PDIP-8
packages, the NCP5104, NCP5106,
NCP5111and NCP5304 are pin-to-
pin compatible with industry standard
devices.
The new A6282 from Allegro
MicroSystems Europe is a 16-channel
LED driver IC with serial data inputs and
outputs which allow easy cascading in
large-scale display applications.
The new device includes an input
shift register, data latches, and 16
constant-current sink drivers delivering
up to 50 mA per channel at 12V. The
CMOS shift registers and latches allow
16-Channel LED Driver with Serial Input/Output Interfacing
direct interfacing with microprocessor-
based systems with supply voltages of
3.3 to 5V.
The 50mA per channel current
rating makes the A6282 suited to
both multiplexed and non-multiplexed
applications, while the 12V maximum
LED voltage allows it to drive either one
LED or series strings of two or three
LEDs on each channel. The maximum
LED drive current can be set by a single
external resistor, and the brightness
of all the channels can be controlled
by applying a pulse-width-modulated
(PWM) signal to the 'output enable'
input.
Serial data input rates can reach up
to 30 MHz, and a serial data output
permits cascading of multiple devices
in applications requiring more than 16
LEDs such as megapixel text or video
displays for signs and control panels.
The device can also be used in smaller
applications such as LCD backlighting
or controlling LEDs in an instrument or
control panel.
The device incorporates thermal
shutdown and undervoltage lockout
protection and power-on reset. It
operates over a temperature range of
-40C to +85C, making it suitable for use
in outdoor applications,
The A6282 is available in a variety of
24-terminal package types including
HTSSOP with exposed thermal pad,
the QFN with exposed thermal pad,
measuring 4 x 4mm with 0.5mm pitch,
and the 0.3 inch wide SOIC package.

DDP, a leader in engineered LED
solutions, has developed an advanced
LED color wash lighting and control
system that delivers accent and mood
lighting. DDPs architectural accent
lighting system includes custom
light engines, diffuser panels and
Programmable LED Color Wash Lighting System
microprocessor-controlled schemes
to suit any lighting scheme. DDP has
already delivered such an LED lighting
system to Rubensteins, a New Orleans
based fashion boutique for men and
women.
DDPs unique LED color wash
lighting system is embedded into
eight architectural columns throughout
Rubensteins and is synchronized
through a master controller to subtly
change colors throughout the day.
Lighting designers requested additional
lighting schemes for the boutiques
promotional events such as Mardi Gras,
the Fourth of July and Christmas.
We thoroughly enjoyed working
with the architect to achieve a visually
appealing atmosphere in Rubensteins
that enhances the shopping experience
for its customers, said Tony Toniolo,
DDP President. This low power, low
maintenance LED lighting system
displays our expertise in LED design
and is an excellent example of how DDP
continues to transform LED applications
to offer reliable and customizable
solutions that meet our customers
needs.
DDPs LED color wash system can be
designed using LED light strips, arrays,
or panels to fit any application.

STMicroelectronics has introduced
three monolithic step-up converters for
LED backlights and lighting, providing
30mA or 85mA current sources for
six rows of up to 10 white LEDs.
The LED7706, LED7707 and mobile-
optimized PM6600 include on-chip
MOSFETs to reduce part count, and
operate up to 1MHz to minimize filter
components.
The 30mA LED7706 and 85mA
LED7707, with an output voltage of
36V, enable a single-chip solution for
LCD panels as large as 17 inches. An
external synchronization pin allows
connection of extra devices for larger
screen sizes. The LED7707s 85mA
output also satisfies standalone LED
lighting applications.
Single-Chip LED Backlight Drivers Serve Notebook
PCs and Large Displays
The third device introduced, the
PM6600, joins STs PM66xx family,
which provides a complete notebook
and Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) power-
management solution. Six 36V constant-
current channels of 30mA serve
applications up to large-notebook size.
Like the other two devices, the PM600
features a synchronization pin to operate
larger displays. In addition, the PM6600
implements extensive fault-management
to control backlight operation if the
display sustains damage to the flexible
cable or to groups of LEDs. Detection of
intermittent faults, shorted LEDs, single
or multiple open rows, or combinations
of defects, allow fault-tolerant operation
in the field and assist with maintenance
and repair. The PM6600 accepts input
voltages from 4.5V to 28V.
All three devices include power-saving
modes to optimize efficiency under
light-load conditions, as well as PWM
dimming down to 1% duty cycle. Each
device is stable with a ceramic output
capacitor to reduce bill-of-materials
costs. There is also built-in protection
against thermal overload, output over-
voltage and MOSFET over-current. The
24-pin VFQFPN package measuring 4
x 4mm delivers a low-footprint solution.
A soft-start function is also featured, to
maximize the lifetime of the backlight.
The LED7706 and LED7707 are
available immediately and the PM6600
is also in full production.
