he evolution of Compumotors powerful 6000 Series
product family continues with the impending release of
a performance enhancing external I/O module. The
VM24 family of external I/O modules will benefit a
variety of industrial applications. With this new product, all of
Compumotors products are true 24V compatible and can
interface with any industrial PLC. Application development and
implementation time will be
greatly reduced with this
new and exciting
product. The
product is ex-
pected to be
released later this
month.
The VM24 external I/O modules act
as an interface for the general-purpose
programmable inputs and outputs of all the 6000
Series servo and microstepping products (AT6nnn products,
62nn stand-alone products, and APEX 615n single-axis prod-
ucts, the ZETA Series, etc.). The VM24 module consists of a
base board and one to three SIM (single in-line module) style
boards that can be inserted to provide the user with a scalable
solution for their input and output needs. Optical isolation was
provided with the 6000 Series original product design. The
VM24 adds the following features and functions to these
products.
C
The outputs are enhanced by an undervoltage lockout circuit
and a thermal shutdown protection circuit. These outputs
operate over 5VDC to 24VDC, will sink 50mA to a TTL level
(0.4VDC), or 0.5A to 2.5VDC and will source 50mA to V0-
2VDC, or 0.5A to V0-2.5VDC.
C
The inputs add decompression, hysteresis, high frequency
filter and an overvoltage clamp to the 6000 Series products.
These sourcing or sinking inputs operate from 5VDC to
24VDC and switch at 1/3 of the supply with the hysteresis
also at 1/3 the supply (e.g., with 24VDC, a 1 is greater
than 16V and a 0 is less than 8VDC with hysteresis
between 16V and 8V).
C
Jumpers are used to configure the inputs for the SIM as
sourcing or sinking. Each socket has its own corresponding
jumper, allowing each input SIM to be independently
configured.
The VM24 module accepts a 50-pin ribbon cable from the 6000
Series product and provides screw terminal connections to the
users application. The 24 I/O signals to/from the 50-pin DIN
connector and the 50-pin screw terminal are interrupted by three
SIM sockets (each SIM interrupts an 8-bit group of signals). The
VM24 module comes configured in one of five ways:
The VM24 module is shipped with a 2-foot cable that has mating
keyed-connectors. Multiaxis 6000 Series products have different
input and output connectors. Therefore, the two multi-axis
configurations (VM8/16 and VM16/8) require a split cable to
access both of these connectors. The VM24 module and
appropriate cable will be shipped from the factory at the time of
order.

Premier 100
Supplement
C
Computerworld has
selected the Premier 100
organizations that are
among the most innovative
at implementing intranet/
Internet applications and
Web sites to create more
efficient cost-effective
methods of sharing
information and conducting
business. Compumotor is
proud to announce that we
were named one of those
Premier 100 organizations.
Computerworld reviewed
the intranet and Internet
applications of 10,000
organizations, comparing
content, maintenance
costs, revenue generation
(if any) and business
benefits. Those companies
selected by Computerworld
as part of the Premier 100
successfully applied
Internet technology more
effectively than other
organizations relative to
their business goals in
order to generate improved
performance and
productivity.
The new switching thresholds are 1/3 of the voltage referenced on
V-I/O for a low and 2/3 of the voltage referenced on V-I/O for a
high. When +5V is used as the referenced voltage for V-I/O,
the inputs are compatible with standard TTL switching levels.
When V-I/O is 24VDC, a high level needs to be approximately
16VDC, rather than the 2.4V that TTL levels require. TTL drivers
will work with our inputs if V-I/O is +5VDC but will not be
compatible if the inputs are referenced to +24VDC.
Programmable Output Improvements
The programmable outputs are now capable of sinking up to
300mA and are short circuit protected. The previous APEX615n
had a 30mA maximum rating for these outputs. The pin marked
OUT-P still must be connected to +5VDC to +24VDC supply, or
the output must be pulled up via the load.
RS485
Communication Added
RS485 serial communication capability is now
a standard feature on the APEX615n family
and is user selectable. A new revision of
firmware, Rev. 4.6 is included in this release to
provide the internal support needed for RS485
capability. RS232/RS485 is selected via
switches added to the control board. These
switches are accessed by removing the front
panel cover.
Enhanced Master Encoder Input
The encoder biasing circuit for the master
encoder input has been upgraded. The
negative side of the differential encoder input
has a higher bias voltage, allowing it to be used more effectively
with a single ended encoder.
ow do you make a good product even better?
Compumotor's commitment to continuous improve-
ment is being manifested in current design improve-
ments to its APEX Series of stand-alone, single axis
servo systems. These products combine the 6000 Series
controllers with the APEX Series of brushless servo drives into
one convenient package. These popular and powerful products
are now shipping with the
following new features.
New Design for Dedicated
Inputs & Outputs
The inputs TRIG, LIMIT & HOM
on the APEX6151, APEX6152
and APEX6154 servo drive/
controllers are now using
switching thresholds propor-
tional to the level of the input
voltage, rather than a fixed TTL
level. The inputs were previ-
ously compatible with +24VDC,
but still used TTL switching
thresholds (even when +24VDC
was the reference).
In the new configuration, users
must attach a new pin, marked
V-I/O, to a voltage between +5V
and +24VDC. The V-I/O pin is
a new input pin that powers the
TRIG, LIMIT & HOM input
circuits. A jumper wire has been
added to the ship kit for the
user to attach +5VDC to the
V-I/O pin if desired. +5VDC is
available on pin 7 of the AUX
connector. If you want to use
+24VDC for these inputs, an
external supply is needed. making

he Hauser product group provides solutions to a variety
of applications ranging from single axis belt drive
positioners to multi-axis gantry systems. These
solutions are primarily based around the HLE Series
product family.
Because of the complex nature of many automation projects,
and the multiplicity of design
methods used to construct a
system, Daedal offers exten-
sive engineering and manufac-
turing resources. Daedal will
work with you from the initial
concept stage to help create
automation positioning
systems that are tailor-made to
exact performance and design
criteria.
HLE Series
With cross-sections ranging
from 60 to 150 mm, the HLE
Series offers high speed and
load capacities over long travel
distances. The roller bearing
design provides a mainte-
nance-free system, and a
carriage life rated for over
60,000 km travel.
A high-strength linear bearing
design is now available in the
HLE 60 Series (designated the
HLE 60 SR). The HLE 60 SR
provides noticeably higher
payload and moment capacities
in a compact package, with
speeds up to 3000 mm/sec.
