Customer Solution
BSQUARE, a Microsoft
®
Windows
®
Systems Integrator and Authorized Microsoft Embedded
Licensing Distributor, has created a dedicated storage appliance reference solution based on an
Intel Storage Solution and a new Microsoft Windows Storage Server operating system. The
BSQUARE reference solution enables qualifying OEMs to meet market needs by delivering a
dependable dedicated server appliance products with lower total costs of ownership.
Intel SSR212CC Storage System
The reference solution is based on the Intel SSR212CC
Storage System. The SSR212CC is a flexible storage
solution that can be scaled for any size business to
address an array of configurations to fulfill a customers
storage needs.
This system is powered by an Intel® Xeon® processor and
has the ability support up 6 Terabytes of raw storage
packaged in a 2U rack mount form factor. (See picture
right)
As a flexible storage solution the SSR212CC system
provides two (2) integrated 1 Gb Ethernet interfaces to
support iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface)
or network attached data part of a storage area network
(SAN).
The SSR212CC Storage System achieves its high data
performance by incorporating two Intel RAID controllers (SRCS28X) and support for up to 12 hot-
swappable 1.5 or 3.0 Gbps SATA hard drives.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 for Embedded Systems
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 for Embedded systems is specifically targeted for dedicated
storage systems. Built on Windows Server 2003 technology it delivers great performance and
achieves cost savings when designed for dedicated functionality.
With Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 you get:
Superior performance the operating system is optimized for file and print serving
Enhanced security port addresses that are not being used for file service can be shut down
More efficient use of storage space through its single-instance storage capability which
ensures that each file is stored only once.
Fast file retrieval through an indexed search capability, enables files to be served more
than twice as fast as a general-purpose OS
Fast and easy management through remote management snap-in architected specifically
for managing storage-related tasks.
Reference Platform for Storage OEMs
Using the Intel SSR212CC storage system and Microsofts Windows Storage Server 2003 R2
(referred to as WSS 2003 R2), BSQUARE created a ready-to-install WSS2003 R2 OS image for
the SSR212CC. Currently this OS installation package for the Intel SSR212CC storage system is
available as a download. Please visit BSQUAREs website for more information:
(
http://www.bsquare.com/SSR212CC/
).
BSQUAREs WSS 2003 R2 operating system image for the Intel SSR212CC system can be
installed and configured in about 60 90 minutes. This makes an evaluation of the Intel
SSR212CC storage system with WSS 2003 R2 very simple and straight-forward.
Enhanced Dependability
The WSS 2003 R2 operating system enhances the data performance of the Intel SSR212CC
platform. Since the O/S is a dedicated File and Print serving platform, so any functionality that is
unrelated to file and print serving have been removed to leave more memory and resources to
the CPU to exclusively handle file serving tasks.
The WSS operating system is built on Windows Server 2003 technology; however it also contains
some important features that are not available in Windows Server 2003; some of these features
include an advanced storage manager for file filtering and quota management, a new Network
File System (NFS) server to improve performance, and a fully integrated Web-based user
interface for remote management.
Additionally WSS 2003 R2 introduced features such as Single Instance Storage (SIS) to help
consolidate duplicate files, Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for point-in-time shadow copy
capabilities, support for the enhanced version of distributed file system (DFS), and support for the
Microsoft Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Software Initiator.
The VSS and SIS are great features that enhance the dependability and extend storage capability
limits of the Intel SSR212CC storage system.
Single Instance Storage (SIS) is a feature that helps organizations reduce storage needs
for file servers by identifying duplicate files on hard disk volumes and provides an efficient
mechanism to consolidating them to a single common store. SIS can significantly reduce
file server loads by identifying and consolidating duplicate files.
Page 3
According to Microsoft, SIS has realized up to 40 percent reduction of storage needs on
deployments so far with in their own organization. For detailed information about the
benefits and usages of SIS, please refer to Microsofts SIS whitepaper:

Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) provides the Intel storage system a mechanism
that handles data protection by automating non-intrusive backups, rapid data restores
and data transport that operate quietly in the background without interrupting file serving
operations. This particular feature allows the Intel SSR212CC storage system to recover
lost or corrupted storage data in a matter of minutes opposed to hours or days.
The Intel SSR212CC storage systems performance, interoperability with storage area networks
(SANs), scalability and failover capabilities are powered by Intels hardware support of SATA
(1.5/3.0 Gbs) hard disk drives, RAID (0, 1, 10, 5, 50) and support capability for iSCSI.
Enhancements offered by implementing SIS and/or VSS on the Intel SSR212CC storage system
provides OEMs a platform to effortlessly build reliable and dependable storage appliances.
Reducing Total Cost of Ownership
OEMs that build and ship storage appliances used for fixed function and dedicated servers are
qualified to purchase a category of Microsoft license known as Embedded Servers. This
category offers solutions for many types of specialty servers such as WSS 2003 R2. With WSS
2003 R2 for Embedded Systems, qualified OEMs are able to realize an OS cost savings per unit
of up to 20%.
Any small, mid-size or large OEM who utilizes the Microsoft Embedded Server licensing
category will gain a number of benefits.
Reduced development and licensing costs
Ability to customize and brand your Server Platforms
Device management as an OEM - define your own device upgrade path
Extended Product Lifecycle support and availability
Value-add of dedicated, fixed function server solutions
OEMs are provided access to a toolkit called an OEM Pre-Installation Kit (commonly referred to
as an OPK) that enables them to build customized and branded server platforms. They also
obtain a set of prep tools to streamline reproduction and deployment of server devices. Approved
OEMs are given the ability to bypass Windows Product Activation (WPA) by using a procedure
called OEM Activation 2.0 (formerly known as SLP). This procedure allows OEMs to
significantly simplify and automate their deployment process by eliminating the requirement of
manually executing WPA for all units built. The OEM Activation procedure greatly streamlines
production and deployment especially for OEMs who are shipping in high volumes.
Becoming an Embedded OEM
Your organization must obtain, review, and sign an OEM Customer License Agreement (CLA). If
you wish obtain an OEM CLA or to learn more about the Microsoft Embedded Server offering you
must contact an authorized MS Embedded distributor. To get started please contact BSQUARE

Summary
BSQUAREs WSS 2003 R2 operating system image for the Intel SSR212CC system provides
OEMs a great reference platform image that is straight-forward to install. The preconfigured
image is built using an OPK (as described above) and the self-installer performs a quick
configuration and set up of WSS 2003 RS on the SSR212CC system.
Along with the installer files we also include a quick start document that provides step-by-step
procedures, which explains how to complete the installation. Optionally beyond installation with
an OPK, OEMs have the ability to add additional customizations such as branding, pre-install
their own set of applications and device drivers. The BSQUARE reference image is an excellent
starting point for testing, development or simply as an evaluation of both the Intel storage system
and Microsofts software solutions.
