Locomotive Crank Setup and Procedure
Materials:
1 Buffer Circuit
1 BNC Cable
4 Banana clip wires (1 red, 3 black)
1 Tenma 72-6626 DC Regulated Power Supply
1 HP 6205C DC Power Supply
1 - Ruler
Setup:
1. Using banana cable connect one red and one black wire from power supply to HP
multimeter. Turn on power supply and adjust to 5.6V +/- .05V.
2. Turn off power supply. Unplug from multimeter and plug in to buffer circuit.
This will supply power to the buffer circuit.
3. Plug black banana cable from negative terminal of HP power supply to center
(Earth Ground reference) connector.
4. Connect BNC cable from Clock output (on buffer circuit) to PFI 3 / CTR1_SRC
on labstation panel.
5. Attach black banana cable from negative terminal on HP power supply to IN 0(-)
on labstation panel.
6. Turn on SCXI chassis.
7. From the locomotive crank wire:
a. Plug the green wire (CH A) to the A input on the buffer circuit.
b. Plug white wire (CH B) to the B input on the buffer circuit
c. Plug red wire (MOTOR +V) to the positive terminal of the TENMA
power supply. This powers the motor of the locomotive crank.
d. Plug Black wire (MOTOR GND) to the negative terminal of the TENMA
power supply
e. Plug remaining red and black wire to the positive and negative terminals
of the HP power supply set to 5.6V. This supplies power to the encoder
which is taking your measurements.
f. Plug orange and black wire (OUTPUT) in to IN 0(+) on labstation panel.
g. Plug black wire to IN 0(-) on the labstation panel.
NOTES:
You will not be using the blue wire from the locomotive crank. That is the
direction output and is not used in this lab. What does that mean for your data?
Must you be careful that your crank is always going in the same direction?
Procedure:
1. Ensure SCXI chassis power is on

2. Buffer circuit should be set to DUAL input and X4 filtering.
3. Open Locomotive.VI.
4. Measure R,L, and D.
5. Before starting the VI, set the collar to the minimum position by hand.
6. Start running the VI by clicking the play button. At this point the VI is not
logging data.
7. Begin turning the crank by raising voltage of TENMA power supply (DO NOT
EXCEED 15V!) to the desired voltage.
8. Click the Begin Data Capture button to start logging data. Click the button again
to stop logging data. The VI will then prompt you for a filename.
