Installation Instructions for
Quick Fit Hitch Receiver Model 1400
The Guardian Alert Backup Warning System Model 1400 Receiver Hitch system installs easily. Just follow the
4-step process listed below.
Before installing the system, please check to see that the box contains (1) Guardian Alert Model 1400 Receiver
Hitch sensor, (1) interior indicator, (5) wire ties, and a set of wiring. If any of these items are missing, please contact
S&S LLC at (800) 998-0555.
The Guardian Alert Model 1400 Receiver Hitch installs into any class III 2 square receiver hitch. The wiring is
installed permanently to the vehicle and the system is used when the receiver hitch is not being used for towing.
The wires can be installed through the interior of the vehicle (on the floor, ceiling or molding) or underneath the
vehicle. The corresponding steps listed below may vary according to the location of the interior indicator and the
desired installation of the wires.
To install the Guardian Alert system, follow the steps listed below:
Step 1: Power Wiring:
Using a cable tie, attach the black 4-pin connector at the end of the wiring to the frame of
the receiver. Work the short wire (with bare wire ends) towards the reverse lights or if fitted to a towing
socket with reverse light power. By splicing directly into the wiring, connect this wire to the reverse lights.
For the best connection, it is recommended that one inch of insulation is removed and these two wires
are soldered to the vehicle reverse light wiring and properly re-insulated.
The spare wire may be neatly
wrapped and tied up behind the rear bumper or other convenient location. Do not be concerned with the
polarity of the wires (positive or negative). The system will work either way.
Step 2: Indicator Cable:
Work the long wire (with the white AMP connector) towards the passenger
compartment, entering through any convenient hole, and ending in a position on the left side of the
windshield. If no hole is available make one by drilling a 7/16 hole, insert the cable and use silicon rubber
to seal it.
Step 3: Interior indicator placement:
Place the interior indicator in a forward area of the vehicle that is visible to
the drive and within his or range of hearing. Conceal the indicator wire and place it in an area that will
remain free of driver interference.
Step 4: Attachment:
Insert the Receiver Hitch unit into the hitch with the cable coming out to the right. Connect
the connector from the sensor and the wiring together and lock the ring on the connector.
The installation of the Guardian Alert Backup Warning Model 1400 Receiver Hitch system is complete. Now
turn to the enclosed Guardian Alert Receiver Hitch Model 1400 Testing Instructions and complete all of the
steps to ensure that the installation was done correctly and the system is working properly.
IMPORTANT: The Guardian Alert Backup Warning System is a driver aid and is not intended to replace established safety
procedures used when a vehicle is in reverse.

9-5-3 Testing Instructions
Quick Fit Hitch Receiver Model 1400
Now that the Guardian Alert Model 1400 installation is complete, follow all of the testing instructions listed
below to ensure that the system is operating correctly. Do not use the Guardian Alert Backup Warning System
until you have completed this testing process and have ascertained that the system is working correctly.
WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN WORKING AROUND ANY BACKING VEHICLE !!!!!!!
Step #1:
Park the vehicle on level ground at this time. Using a tape measure or a yardstick, measure the
distance between the sensor and the ground. The Guardian Alert is set for optimum
performance at a distance of twenty-four (24) to forty-two (42) inches between the sensor and the
ground.
Step #2:
One person should remain in the vehicle at all times. Set the parking brake.

Turn the
ignition switch on and place it in reverse. At this time, a green light will appear on the interior
indicator to indicate that the system has been activated. If the green light does not come on when
the vehicle is placed in reverse, check the system to ensure that it is completely and correctly
installed. It is possible if the green light does not come on that there is not enough voltage to the
system. Check the battery with a voltage meter to ensure that there is at least 12 volts going to
the system.
Step #3
:
Using a tape measure, mark off a distance of twelve feet straight out from behind the vehicle.
Ask a person to stand there. The vehicle should remain stationary while the person begins to walk
toward it from behind. When the person reaches a distance of nine to ten feet from the sensor,
the interior indicator should turn to a flashing yellow/green light and sound a pulsating noise.
When the person reaches a distance of five feet from the sensor, the interior indicator should turn
to a flashing red /green light and sound a faster pulsating noise. When the person is within a
distance of three feet of the vehicle, the interior indicator will show a solid red light and the noise
should become continuous, warning the driver that an object is dangerously close to the vehicle.
Step #4:
Now, place an object, such as metal folding chair, fifteen feet behind the vehicle. Put the vehicle
in reverse and back toward the object. The interior indicator should react in the same manner
described in Step #3 as the vehicle comes within nine feet, five feet, and three feet of the object.
Step #5:
Troubleshooting
. After making any adjustments during the testing of the Guardian Alert,
please return to Step #1 and complete the entire test to ensure that the system is working
correctly.
If the system is not working correctly after completing these procedures, please contact S&S LLC at (800) 998-
0555

Do all tests from both side of the sensor.
(1) First, find a spot that is one foot from the side of the sensor and twelve feet
back and walk to the side of the sensor at a normal walking pace. You should hear three separate tones at nine feet, five
feet, and three feet. (2) Second, find a spot that is four to five feet outside of the sensor and twelve feet back. Walk in a
straight line to the outside of the bumper. You should hear two separate tones at nine feet and at five feet. (3) Finally, find
the same spot that was four feet outside of the sensor, and twelve feet to the back (No. 2). This time walk in a straight line
directly toward the unit from that spot, you should receive the same three signals as the first test (No. 1) that you did at
nine feet, five feet, and three feet.
*All numbers are approximate and may vary from system to system.
