COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING VISION
Vision
The College of Engineering will be an acknowledged leader in engineering and
technology education.
Mission
Through education, research, and service, we will prepare our graduates to integrate
their expertise as engineers and technologists with cultural understanding to improve
life in the region and the world.
Core Values We will be known for the high quality of our programs. We will focus on teaching and learning. We will demonstrate commitment to scholarship and the discovery and creation of
new knowledge. We will exhibit a strong work ethic. Faculty, staff, and students will all exhibit personal integrity in scholarship and
personal interactions. Our College will be characterized by a sense of community. We will value diversity and show respect for every individual.
This has
been an
exceptional
year for the
College of
Engineering.
It was
difficult to edit this edition of the newslet-
ter because there were so many accom-
plishments that could become subjects for
stories. We appreciate all the faculty and
staff members who contributed ideas,
pictures, and story drafts. If you would
like to contribute information for the next
edition (scheduled for publication in
October 2003), please send me your
materials by September 1, 2003.
We continue to be very proud of all of
our students and alumni. We are also very
grateful to the large number of supporters
and friends who continue to help make
Tennessee Techs College of Engineering
an engineering college of choice. It is
especially gratifying to see an increasing
number of alumni, staff, faculty, and
administrators who are stepping up as
contributors. Our programs have proven
to be worthy of strong support over the
long haul, and the students who are here
today stand on the shoulders of all of those
who came before. Tennessee Tech pro-
vides one of the very best educational
values in the United States, and our
alumni are known throughout the profes-
sional world for their solid grasp of
fundamental principles, their firm ground-
ing in the subtleties of real physical
systems, and their incredible can do
attitude. 2

Corporate friend, alums
support Mini-Baja,
Formula One teams
Although TTU student-built vehicles
have been racing past their competition,
getting to the competition has been a
challenge until now.
Jacobs Sverdrup, a Tullahoma-based
company, stepped in to donate a $5,000
trailer to haul our Mini Baja and Formula
SAE race cars. The donation is another link
in the already strong connection between
the company and the university.
We employ more than 150 Tennessee
Tech engineering and computer science
graduates in Tullahoma, and almost 250 in
eight company offices, says Sverdrup
senior engineer Milt Davis.
Tennessee Tech alumni and other
Jacobs Sverdrup employees had a chance
to see what they were investing in when
the company hosted an informal get-
together at the Hands-On Science Center
in Tullahoma and invited the student
teams to show off their vehicles.
Were excited about our relationship
with Jacobs Sverdrup, says Dale Wilson,
TTU chair of Mechanical Engineering. We
enjoy connecting with our alumni in
Tullahoma and anticipate that this project
is just the first of many more activities as a
result of our partnership.
ABET Commission
reviews Engineering
programs
A team of 10 distinguished engineers
visited the College of Engineering last
October for a routine review of TTUs
Engineering programs.
Team members included Accredita-
tion Board for Engineering and Technol-
ogy program evaluators for Chemical,
Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and
Mechanical Engineering programs, as well
as a team chair, trainees, and an observer
from the Tennessee Board of Architectural
and Engineering Examiners.
At the exit interview with TTU
President Bob Bell it was clear that ABET
team members were impressed with
everything theyd seen. Dean Glen
Johnson noted that the whole college had
pulled together as an effective team in
preparing for ABET, and the result
reflected the team effort.
Accreditation from the Engineering
Accreditation Commission of ABET is the
highest level of accreditation that can be
achieved by Engineering programs in the
U.S. TTU has had continuously accredited
programs in Engineering since 1966.
Dean Johnson and Drs. Nader
Ghafoori, Jessica Matson, and David
Elizandro are EAC/ABET program
evaluators.
