A.C. VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSOR MODEL: MCP THREE PHASE SILICON
1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The MCP THREE PHASE SILICON A.C. Voltage Surge
Suppressor is a fast responding, high current handling, solid-state device designed to
protect electronic equipment and systems from transient overvoltages on 120/208 VAC,
three phase, 4-wire services. This suppressor is designed for system exposure per category
C
3
IEEE C62.41 1991. It performs this function by limiting the magnitude of transient
over voltages that are present upon the A.C. power lines. Continuous bipolar, bi-
directional, non-interrupting protection is provided. This suppressor utilizes silicon junction
avalanche suppressor diodes (SASD) in a Lattice Matrix configuration. The device begins
to suppress transient over voltages at approximately 120% of the peak nominal voltage of
the A.C. sine wave. At maximum power dissipation the suppressor will not exceed the
maximum voltage protection level. The MCP THREE PHASE SILICON is equipped with
isolated, form-C relay contacts (C, NO, NC) that change state to show the suppressor
operational status. LED indicators are provided on the face of the suppressor that illuminate
to show Power On and Suppressor Operational. The suppressor is housed inside a non-
metallic enclosure with a U.L. fire rating of 94-5V. It attaches in parallel with the load
requiring protection with a ½ NPT male threaded hub for easy conduit attachment. The
MCP THREE PHASE SILICON is designed to meet UL 1449 requirements.

2.3.1
Enclosure
Description:
The
suppressor is housed inside a black, non-metallic
module rated to U.L. 94-5V. The overall dimensions are 6.63"H x 4.15"W x
3.25"D (16.84 cm x 10.54cm x 8.25cm). The weight is 1.8lb (.8kg).
2.3.2
Material:
The
material
shall be as specified herein. However, when a definite
material is not specified, the material utilized will enable the device to meet
the performance requirements of this specification.
3.0 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS: The installation and placement of the suppressor are
as outlined herein. For optimum suppressor performance, install the suppressor as close as
possible to the protected equipment and cut the power leads as short as possible upon
installation.
3.1 Power Connections: Four(4) #10 AWG (2.95mm) wires are provided for power
connection to the suppressor. The neutral (White), L1 (Black), L2 (Red), and L3
(Orange) line wires are each 18 (45.7cm) long. These wires exit the lower end of the
unit via a ½ NPT male conduit hub. Refer to the illustration on page 4 for
installation details.
3.2 Disconnector: The suppressor is intended for parallel connection with the A.C. power
source. A 3-pole disconnect switch is recommended to be installed in series between
the suppressor assembly and the A.C. power source for service. The switch should be
sized for #10 AWG (2.95mm) wire.
3.3 Remote Annunciation Connections: One (1) 3-pin, Euro-style deplugable terminal
block is provided for connection to the suppressor status relay contacts. This terminal
block is located on the top end of the unit. The terminal contact is sized for use with
16AWG (1.5mm) wire. Contact positions are labeled C for Common, NO for
Normal Open, and NC for Normal Closed with respect to power off. The relays are
interlinked to provide a single point status to show failure of any phase.
3.4 Transfer Switches: It is recommended that the suppressor assembly be installed on the
Load Side of power transfer switches if these devices are incorporated in the A.C.
circuit requiring transient protection. This will eliminate any transients generated by
a transfer or alternate power source.

4.2 Storage Temperature: -40º to +65º C
4.3 Relative Humidity: ................................................................................................. 90%
4.4 Ventilation: The suppressor shall be installed in an area free from direct sun loading,
with a maximum ambient temperature of +65º C.
STATUS INDICATORS: The suppressor is provided with LEDs and relay circuits to show the
status of the unit during normal operation and fault conditions. Yellow LED indicates Power
On, Green LED indicates Suppressor Operation.
