Pedestrian Crosswalk Beacon Installed on South College Drive

To enhance pedestrian safety, the City of Santa Maria is installing a flashing yellow
beacon at the crosswalk on South College Drive, near Rotary Centennial Park and
Robin Ventura Field. Work began April 29 and the device is scheduled to become
operational May 7.

The beacon will face northbound and southbound traffic. The flashing yellow beacon
will be activated when a pedestrian presses a button. Oncoming traffic is required to
stop and wait for the pedestrian to cross.

This is the second device of its type to be installed in the City. The other device is
located at the crosswalk between the Town Center mall and the County Superior Court
complex. There, the beacon faces eastbound and westbound traffic on Cook Street. It
was installed in December 2005.
