School (Texas) head coach Rhonda Farney and Oak Ridge
High School (Tenn.) head coach Jill
Prudden have been selected by the
USA Basketball Womens Collegiate
Committee to serve as court coaches
during the June 15-18 USA Basket-
ball Womens Junior National Team
Trials.
Farney just completed her duties
as a member of the WBCA Board of
Directors as its High School repre-
sentative.
The high school coaching duo
assisted the 2001 USA Basketball
Womens Junior World Champion-
ship Team coaching staff during the Trials, which will be held
at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo-
rado.
Working with USA head coach Geno Auriemma (Con-

Willette White (Northeastern, Mass.), the Trials court coach-
ing staff will be responsible for conducting drills, coaching
scrimmages and working with players who will be vying for
spots on the USA team. Thirty-one of the nations top 19-

USA Junior squad was announced following the June 18 ses-
sion.
A member of the USA Basketball Womens Cadet and
Youth Committee, the 2001Junior Trials marks Farneys first
USA Basketball coaching assignment.
I was excited to be able to work with USA Basketball,
said Farney. I saw the names of the players who were going
to be there and was thrilled to have the opportunity to work
with these young women. I was also very excited to work with
all of the coaches on the staff. Whenever you have the chance
to work with that caliber of coaches and players is a great
opportunity. I looked forward to it and will be able to return to
Georgetown with these experiences that will only help my team
next year.
Farney, a 26-year (1974-75 to
present) high school coaching vet-
eran, has compiled a 636-183 record
(77.7 winning percentage) and cap-
tured 24 district championships in her
career. Farney has spent the last 13
years, dating to the 1987-88 season,
as the head coach at Georgetown
where she has piloted her teams to a
344-100 record for a 77.5 winning per-
centage.
During her tenure at Georgetown,
her squads have earned three regional
crowns (1992, 1992, 1996) and ad-
vanced to the state Final Four in each of those three years.
Thirty-one former Farney-led players have received col-
lege basketball scholarships, including 13 at the NCAA Divi-
sion I level, while an additional 26 former players have en-
tered into the coaching profession.
In 1991, following her first Texas Final Four appearance,
Farney was tabbed the 1991 Texas Coach of the Year. She
was honored in 1996 by the National Federation of State High
School Associations as the Section 6 Coach of the Year and
also earned 1996 Converse/WBCA District VI Coach of the
Year accolades. Additionally, Farney served as an assistant
coach at the 1996 Nike/WBCA High School All-American
Game.
Farney was once on the Board of Directors for both the
WBCA and the National Federation Coaches Association and

WBCA High School NoteBook
Beginning with the August issue of At The Buzzer, the
Womens Basketball Coaches Association will reserve this
space to let you know what is going on in the organization
that effects high school coaches. In an effort to better serve
you, the WBCA Media and Public Relations Office has given
ATB a new look, design and more emphasis on news, and
issues that have to deal with to our high school membership.
Our organizations publication, Coaching Womens Basket-
ball, will reserve two to four pages in each issue for high school
feature stories, coaching news and any other information that
pertains to the high school game. The WBCA is also making
the ATB an eight page publication in order to bring you more
information on your sport and all the latest news from the
WBCA.This space will be the gathering place for WBCA infor-
mation, such as awards timelines, legislative changes, and
news on upcoming events the WBCA is sponsoring. We hope
you enjoy this new look and find that it is helpful as you strive
to grow in this great sport.
Shelbyvilles Rick Insell new HS Rep to WBCA Board
Shelbyville Central (TN) High School Head Coach Rick
Insell has been elected as the High School representative to
the WBCA Board of Directors. Insell just completed his 24th
year of coaching at Shelbyville where his team finished with a
35-2 record and claimed its eighth state championship to go
with his two USA Today National Crowns. Insells career record
is a mind-boggling 661-124. Over the last 24 years Insells
squads have notched 20 District Championships, 14 Regional
Championships, five Tennessee Class AAA second-place fin-
ishes, two USA Today National Runner Up finishes and five
Class AA Miss Basketballs. Insells teams hold Tennessee
High School records for consecutive wins (110), consecutive
state titles (4, 1989-92) and most state titles (8). Shelbyville
was the first high school team to be named the Tennessee
Sports Hall of Fame Team of the Year (1990). Insell also re-
ceived a special invitation to the oval office by former Presi-
dent George Bush for academic and athletic achievement.
He was an assistant coach this past year at the Phoenix/WBCA
High School All-America Game in Hartford Conn., and was
also a member of the High School All-America Game Selec-
tion Committee. Insell has worked with the WBCA in many
other capacities throughout his career.
WBCA HS Member Coaches Needed To Fill Committee
The WBCA is currently looking for High School member
coaches to fill vacant spots on the High School All-American
Game Selection Committee. For more information on gaining
a spot on this committee, contact Kristen Miller, WBCA Man-
ager of Office Administration and Awards at 770/279-8027,
x102, or by e-mail at
kmiller@wbca.org.
WBCA Offers Special High School Deal
A regular high school membership to join the WBCA runs
$75 per coach. But, if you act now, the WBCA is offering three
coaches, on the same staff, an incredible rate of $120. If you
are a high school head coach and would like to join the WBCA,
along with your assistant coaches -- there is no better time to
become a member. For more information on joining the WBCA,
contact Dorinda Schremmer, Director of Membership Services,
at 770/279-8027, or email at,
dorindas@wbca.org.
