OUTDOOR STORAGE/DISPLAY OF MERCHANDISE
The issue of outdoor storage/display of merchandise is an important topic for both merchants
and the City. Nevertheless, the City understands the need for merchants to display their
wares so as to draw customers into their store. The city also realizes that outdoor storage/
display of merchandise works to the detriment of businesses, residents and the City alike.

Chapter 30 of the Glendale Municipal Code addresses the issue of outdoor storage and
display of merchandise. It states all uses shall be conducted entirely within a completely
enclosed building, and that there shall be no outside storage or display of merchandise,
although a permit may be obtained to display merchandise outside a building for the purpose
of conducting a special sale on no more than four (4) occasions per year.
When businesses store or display merchandise outdoors on the sidewalk or right-of-way it
can be the cause of potential mishaps that can be a liability to businesses and the city.
Outdoor storage and displays can impede the flow of pedestrian traffic, interfere with city
employees working in the area and prevent emergency response personnel from performing
their duties.

Because the City is concerned about presenting a safe, attractive environment for residents
and businesses alike, the Community Development Departments' Code Compliance Unit will
be enforcing the Glendale Municipal Code relating to outdoor storage and display of
merchandise.
