MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2005
1. Introduction of City Manager Employees Susan Childs and
Wayne Pryor
Bio for Susan Childs
Susan Childs has been the Internal Auditor for the Town since
December 1998. Through her audits, she helps to assure that tax
dollars are appropriately and efficiently spent. With the assistance
of the external auditors, she evaluates the adequacy and
effectiveness of our internal controls, the compliance with laws,
policies, regulations and procedures and the safeguarding of the
Town's assets.
A transplant from Montgomery County in 1979, this is Susan's first
governmental work experience. Her 26 years of working
background has primarily been in the hospitality business. She has
worked locally at the Carousel and Clarion hotels in the
accounting/auditing fields. She came to work for the Town from
the Island of Lanai, Hawaii where she was the Director of
Purchasing for the Island. Since many of the functions of the
Town of Ocean City involve the hospitality business, her
background is a natural blend of experience for her job.
Susan is married to Jay, who is a carpenter and has helped build
many of the condominiums in Ocean City. She has a son,
Jonathan, who is in 4th grade at Berlin Intermediate School. Her
family currently resides in Bishopville.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1979.
Personal interests include ceramics, stained glass and basically
anything involving arts and crafts. She also likes to travel and
camp with her husband and son. Currently, her focus is making
scrapbooks so that she and her family will be able to remember all
of their happy times together.
Bio for Wayne M. Pryor
Wayne Pryor is the Grants Coordinator for the Town. Hired in November 2003, Wayne
is responsible for researching, writing, and coordinating grant funded programs for the
Town of Ocean City. Primary duties include identifying new grant opportunities for our
various Departments, as well as monitoring the implementation and completion of the
Towns numerous federal, state and local grants. Wayne is responsible for bringing in
over $1.3 million dollars into the Town in his first 14 months.
A native of Marylands Eastern Shore, Wayne has a unique blend of public and private
sector professional experience. He brings to us over 17 years of financial and managerial
background obtained in his previous career as an Administrative Manager with the
Plymouth Tube Company. Wayne is a former Assistant General Manager for the
community of Ocean Pines, and served as the Assistant to the Town Manager for the
Town of Snow Hill. He has also been on the staff of the Aspen Institute for Humanistic
Studies, and served as a Curator for the Julia Purnell Museum.
Married to a former foreign exchange student from Honduras, Central America, his wife
Norma, is a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESOL) at Bennett Middle School
in Salisbury. Wayne has identical twin stepsons, both graduates of Salisbury University.
Wayne graduated with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Social Science from
Salisbury University, and graduated magna cum laude from California National
University with a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA), with a
concentration in management. He is a member of the International Honor Society, Delta
Epsilon Tau, a member of the Governors Grants Office local government subcommittee,
Elks Lodge #817, and a Notary Public for the State of Maryland.
Personal interests include Civil War history, Baltimore Ravens season ticket holder, die-
hard Baltimore Orioles fan, and enjoying the game of golf.
