EE 341 -- Chapter 7 (4
th
Ed.), Induction Machines:
The following is a section-by-section listing indicating some important concepts and
those parts that will not be tested on; note this does NOT include all concepts that you are
responsible for.
1.
Induction motor construction -- stator, similar to that of Sync. Machine (SM);
rotor, squirrel cage or wound rotor.
2.
Basic Induction Machine Concepts -- note same definition of synchronous speed
as for SM; slip defined; frequency of rotor current. DO KNOW that the speed of
the flux produced by the rotor currents with-respect-to the rotor + the rotor speed
= synchronous speed!!
3.
Equivalent Circuit of Induction Motor -- final equivalent circuit as refereed to the
stator as given in Fig. 7-14, page 399.
4.
Power and Torque in Induction Machines -- power flow diagram of Fig. 7-13
(page 394) is important; examples show how to determine induced (converted)
torque and load torque; stator and rotor copper (winding) losses. Note, often the
core losses are combined with the rotational (mechanical; friction & windage)
losses.
5.
Induction Motor Torque -Speed characteristics -- pages 409 & 410 are a good
summary of the torque speed characteristics which are shown in Figs. 7-19 and 7-
20.
6.
Variations in induction Motor Torque-Speed Characteristics -- minimal coverage
(general comments given during class lectures); design classifications NOT
covered
7.
Trends in Induction motor Design -- minimal coverage (general comments given
during class lectures)
8.
Starting Induction Motors -- refer to circuit model of Fig. 7-14 (page 399); motor
classifications NOT covered; starting circuits minimal coverage (general
comments given during class lectures)
9.
Speed Control of induction machines -- minimal coverage (general comments
given during class lectures)
10.
Solid-state Induction motor Drives -- follows the material in Chap. 3; general
ideas
11.
Determining Circuit Model Parameters -- no-load test, DC test for stator
resistance, locked rotor test; similar approach as with transformers.
12.
Induction Generator -- general ideas
13.
Induction Motor Ratings -- similar to those sections for Transformers and for SM
14.
