The Changing Nature of
Utility Customer Service
As utilities continue to focus
on their core utility business,
strategies to improve customer
service are increasingly being
devised and implemented.
Utilities are trying new ideas
and using technological
innovations to ensure that
customers are satisfied.
Customer expectations have hit
an all-time high, and continue
to climb. In this challenging
environment, it is clear to
utilities that success depends
on an organizations ability to
strengthen its current customer
relationships.
As the utility industry becomes more competitive and
customer-focused, manufacturers are expected to
adapt their products and services to address these
changes. Milbank Manufacturing Company is a good
example of a company addressing these challenges.
Investor Owned Utilities, Municipal Electric Systems,
and Rural Electric Systems comprise a specialty
portion of Milbanks business. Commercial installations
requiring special components or designs, or higher
amperage requirements can generate extra business at
these accounts. Many WESCO Branches offer stocking
opportunities for these special products that utilities
may require but dont want to carry in active inventory.
Current Transformer rated sockets, Transockets,
CT cabinets, Termination cabinets, Test switches,
Auto bypass sockets, and Heavy-duty lever bypass
CT-rated sockets
cover a large segment of the
commercial metering market for light industrial,
shopping centers, and industrial applications.
Milbank will provide custom wiring diagrams
for factory prewired socket assemblies.
Many of the rural electric systems use meter-breaker
combinations that enable service to both the house
service panel and one or more additional out-buildings,
as well as additional loads like a well pump or grain
dryer. In addition to the breaker, triple tap lugs
or temporary power receptacles are offered.
Auxiliary generator sockets
that provide the utilities
an extra selling tool to the builder/developer and
contractor upgrade market are becoming very popular
in areas where frequent power outages exist.

The Contractors Corner
The largest segment
of todays meter socket
market is in residential
installations served by
the electrical contractor
and home builder. Most
meter sockets are installed
during new home construc-
tion, and the electrical
contractor normally works
with local distribution to
acquire these products.
Residential meter sockets
are typically supplied for
100A, 200A, and 320A
installations, which meet
the load requirements of
most homes or businesses, and are stocked at many
WESCO locations. Milbank offers meter sockets and
allied products to meet nearly any local utility
requirement.
The new, larger, all-electric homes may have metering
requirements above the normal 200A or 320A self-
contained meter requirements. For these special needs,
Milbank offers the K-Series sockets, rated at 480
continuous amps with bolt-in meters. A version of the
single phase K-Series socket is available with two (2)
200A or 225A breakers.

Pedestals for RV/Mobile Home
,
rural service, direct home
mounting, or temporary
power are produced in
one of Milbanks five
USA plants. Pedestals
are available with or
without breakers,
and many are
offered with
accessory branch
breakers and
interchangeable
receptacle kits for
temporary power
requirements.
Commercial Pedestals offer a rugged, attractive alternative
to many municipal electrical needs, including traffic signals
and outdoor lighting applications.
Commercial Meter Pedestals
are used in a variety of applications
from area lighting to temporary power, and can be used anywhere
that distribution and control equipment are required. They are ideal
for traffic signals, street lighting, irrigation/sprinkler systems, cell
towers/telephone vaults, pump stations, temp power for fairgrounds/
portable offices, outdoor lighting, backup power systems, and reserve
power systems. These pedestals are configurable with a wide variety
of switches, load centers, photoelectric controllers, battery backup,
and irrigation controllers. To find out how commercial pedestals will
help you in your market, contact Dave Stipe, Commercial Pedestal Sales,
