DESCRIPTION
The Reliance Electric Output Ammeter Kit measures
and indicates the output current in amperes for a wide
range of General Purpose A C VKSR Drive Controllers
and Variable Torque A C VKS Drive Controllers as listed
above. This is the current drawn by the motor or motors.
The kit includes a NEMA 1 enclosure for remote mount
ing of the ammeter if desired. The ammeter with at
tached PC board can also be removed from the NEMA
1 enclosure for mounting in an existing door or panel.
The meter is calibrated at the factory and should not re
quire further adjustment. If field calibration is found to be
necessary, a known reference current at 60 Hertz
should be used. The current readings shown are RMS
values, not instantaneous peak values. The meter accu
racy
is "5%.
Tables 1 and 2 list the Output Ammeter Kit which should
be used with each size controller.

Upon receiving, check the contents of the kit received
with the contents listed in Table 3. Store this equipment
in a clean and dry area until ready to use. The ambient
temperature of the storage area must not exceed 65癈
(149癋) or go below -40癈 ( -40癋).
INSTALLATION
NOTE: All components of the Output Ammeter Kit must
be mounted in a clean and dry environment. Maximum
ambient temperature must not exceed 40癈.
WIRE SIZING NOTE: Care should be taken to see that
all interconnecting wiring is sized and installed in con
formance with me National Electrical Code (NEC) pub
lished by the National Fire Protection Association, or the
Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and other applicable
local codes.
1. Disconnect all power to the A C VKS Drive before
installing this kit.
DANGER
EQUIPMENT IS AT LINE VOLTAGE WHEN A C
POWER IS CONNECTED TO THE A C VKS
DRIVE CONTROLLER. ALL UNGROUNDED
CONDUCTORS OF THE A C POWER LINE MUST
BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE CONTROLLER
BEFORE IT IS SAFE TO TOUCH ANY INTERNAL
PARTS OF THIS EQUIPMENT. AFTER POWER IS
REMOVED, USE A VOLTMETER TO VERIFY
THAT THE D C BUS FILTER CAPACITORS ARE
DISCHARGED BEFORE TOUCHING ANY IN
TERNAL PARTS OF THE CONTROLLER. FAIL
URE TO OBSERVE THESE PRECAUTIONS
COULD RESULT IN FATAL INJURY.
2. Mount the ammeter in the desired location. Use the
provided NEMA 1 enclosure or mount directly in an
existing door or panel. See Figure 6 for the layout
of the mounting holes if the meter is to be door/pan
el mounted. The maximum allowable distance be
tween the ammeter and the current transformer is
200 feet. 3

NOTE: The ammeter should NOT be mounted in the
door of the A C VKS Drive Controller because this
will void the oil tight or water tight characteristics of
the enclosure. Gasketed meters meeting NEMA 12
requirements can be ordered for factory mounting.
3. Disconnect the output power lead that will run thru
the current transformer. Refer to Figure 2 and Table
4 for the appropriate lead number.
NOTE: For the 125 thru 150 horsepower, 460 and
575 volt controllers, remove the power module cov
er, open the two doors, and locate lead 603 at the
bottom of the power module. See Figures 3 and 4.
Remove lead 603 using a 7/16" wrench on the hex
head screw securing the lead to the power module.
Cut the tyrap which secures cable 603 to the right
edge of the power module.
4. Mount the current transformer in the A C VKS Drive
Controller as shown in Figure 4. Secure in place
with the provided hex nuts, flat washers and lock
washers (with the provided taptite screws for 5 thru
50 horsepower, 460 and 575 volt controllers).
DANGER
DO NOT OPERATE THE CONTROLLER WHEN
THE CURRENT TRANSFORMER IS NOT CON
NECTED TO THE AMMETER. DAMAGE TO THE
CURRENT TRANSFORMER MAY OCCUR AND
HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE MAY OCCUR. FAILURE
TO OBSERVE THIS PRECAUTION COULD RE
SULT IN FATAL INJURY.
5. Run the power lead disconnected in Step 3 thru the
current transformer and reconnect the lead to the
terminal from which it was disconnected.
NOTE: For the 125 thru 150 horsepower, 460 and
575 volt controllers, reconnect lead 603 to the pow
er module with the 7/16" hex head screw removed
in Step 3. With the provided tyrap, secure cable 603
to the right edge of the power module.
6. Using #16 AWG twisted pair rated 600 volts, con
nect the two terminals of the current transformer to
terminals 419 and 519 of the ammeter. See Figure
2. Polarity of these connections is not important.
Current flow is approximately 0.8 amp maximum.
7. Replace the power module cover on the 125 thru
150 horsepower, 460 and 575 volt controllers.
8. Re apply power to the A C VKS Drive.

CALIBRATION
The calibration of the ammeter is factory set and no fur
ther adjustment should be needed. If calibration is re
quired, operate the A C VKS Drive at 60 Hertz and use
a clamp on test ammeter on the motor lead running thru
the current transformer. Adjust the output ammeter to
read the same as t
