Two-Channel Intercom Power Supply
D E S C R I P T I O N
The PS-232 is the most advanced and innovative party-line power supply in
Clear-Coms history.
Featuring a custom-programmed microprocessor to control the power supply, the
PS-232 runs cooler and recovers more quickly under a full load than anything else
on the market. The 1-RU PS-232 can supply up to 2 amps peak at 30 volts DC to
two channels. This is sufficient to power up to 40 beltpacks or 15 speaker stations,
even under the most demanding conditions. Either channel is capable of supplying
up to 2 amps. The full current capacity may be divided between the two channels.
Clear-Coms advanced fail-safe design can sense the difference between a short and
an overload. Should a problem occur, each channels DC overload/fault LED identi-
fies the power supplys response to the problem: solid means an overload is sensed,
but still powered; blinking means power has been temporarily cut off to protect the
power supply. If both channels are operating and one channel has a fault, the other
channel will continue to operate normally. Power is restored to the shorted or over-
loaded channel in a little as .5 seconds. With our exclusive IntelligentFault/Overload
Sensing (IFOS), the PS-232 will dynamically increase this time period before
attempting another reset until the fault or overload is corrected. This function signif-
icantly extends component life. And there is no need to disconnect stations for the
power supply to reset.
In addition to system power, each channel offers a switchable termination and
three parallel XLR connectors, as well as an adjustable program feed. Connection to
remote stations is made with standard 2-conductor shielded mic cable. Program sig-
nal is fed into the system through a rear-panel, balanced TRS connector next to a
global input-level trim control. Individual on/off and program-send levels for each
channel are available on the front panel.
The unit also offers a convenient front panel intercom line jack, switchable to
either channel. This can be quite handy for troubleshooting or simply a time saver
when quick access to either intercom line is needed.
Another feature unique to the PS-232 is a built-in test tone generator. A 440Hz
tone is available on either or both channels and is indispensable for system diagnos-
tics and set-up. Simply flip a switch, set a level, and go.

Like all current Clear-Com Party-Line power supplies, two or more units can
be connected in parallel for increased system capacity or backup redundancy.
Multiple units will automatically synchronize their response to power faults and
overloads. The PS-232 can also operate as a single-channel unit by using the
front-panel A+B link switch. Unitized chassis construction of heavy-gauge alu-
minum and an extra thick front panel create a rugged, durable enclosure able
to withstand the rigors of portable use.
The PS-232 is UL listed and CE certified. Its universal switching power
supply will accept input voltages between 90 and 240 VAC, for trouble-free
use anywhere.
A & E S P E C I F I C AT I O N S
The EIA standard 1-RU rack-mountable two-channel intercom power supply
shall have rear-panel connections for two intercom channels, each with three
male 3-pin XLR connectors and a termination switch. The rear panel shall also
have a TRS balanced line-level program input, program-level trim pot and IEC
type AC input connector. The front panel shall have program send level, pro-
gram On/Off switch, and an overload LED for each channel. It shall also have a
power On/Off switch, power On LED, A+B link On/Off switch, A+B link on
LED, test tone On switch, male 3-pin XLR intercom line connector, and an
A/B channel-select switch for that connector. The power supply shall be capable
of supplying up to 2 amps to any one channel with a total unit maximum cur-
rent capacity of 2 amps peak at 30 VDC.
The built-in test-tone generator shall produce a steady tone of 440 Hz,
+/- 8%. The units power supply shall work with any AC wall voltage between
90 and 240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz. Two or more PS-232 units wired together shall
automatically synchronize any protection circuit and subsequent system reset
response to circuit shorts or overloads. The units fault/overload restore timing
will be based upon thermal modeling of the power supply circuitry and will
adjust the power-restore times appropriately.
The dimensions shall be 19 W x 5.25 D x 1.75 H (483mm x 133mm
x 44mm); weight shall be 4.5 lbs. (2.05kg). The power supply shall be known
as the Clear-Com PS-232.
