In case of a oil or other hazardous material spill:
Immediately notify the Director of Environmental Health & Safety. After hours, call Campus Safety,
who will contact the EH&S Director. The EH&S Director will evaluate the situation, and will request
assistance from outside emergency responders, if necessary.
Restrict access to impacted and threatened areas.
Keep unprotected personnel upwind of spill area.
Avoid contact with spilled product.
Eliminate ignition sources that may be present.
Consider potential mixing of incompatible materials.
Use explosion-proof and spark-proof equipment where necessary.
Evacuate the area, if necessary.
If it can be done safely, prevent released material from entering sewers and confined spaces by use
of booms, dikes and absorbent pads. Spill kits are staged at the following locations:

If there is a spill of a hazardous chemical in a laboratory or other academic location (e.g., Art studio, etc.), the
responsible faculty member is responsible for cleaning the spill, if the spill meets ALL of the following criteria:
The physical (e.g., fire) and health (e.g., corrosive) hazards of the spilled material are known.
The faculty member has the expertise necessary to address the spill safely.
The necessary supplies and equipment are available.
The necessary safety/personal protective equipment is available and used.
If these requirements are unable to be met, or if there is an immediate health threat or a large
quantity (>1 liter) of flammable or highly hazardous material is involved, the responsible faculty
member should evacuate the area, and contact the Director of EH&S, at ext. 2252, or by calling
Campus Safety.
In the event of a radiological spill, remain calm. Remove contaminated clothing, gently wash
contaminated skin with soap and water. Blot the skin dry. Remain in the lab and call the Director of
Environmental Health and Safety. After hours, call Campus Safety.

XPLOSION
Immediately initiate building evacuation and Campus Safety notification, by pulling an alarm.
If you know how to do so without endangering yourself or others, and only if you are confident that
you will be successful, attempt to extinguish the flames. (Connecticut College policy states that
individuals are not required to fight fires. Those that choose to fight small, incipient stage fires must
be trained in the proper use of fire extinguishers.)
If the fire is large or spreading, shut down any equipment which may add fuel to the fire. Do not turn
off any fume hoods in the immediate area, as they will tend to keep the area free of smoke and
fumes. Leave the fire area and prevent the fires spread by closing the doors behind you.
Evacuate all rooms, closing all doors to confine the fire and reduce oxygen DO NOT LOCK
DOORS!
Once outside proceed to the Designated Assembly Area for that building. Check in with the
Housefellow, Supervisor or faculty member who will be taking roll.
Keep roadways, fire lanes, hydrants and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and crews.
Await the arrival of Campus Safety and the New London Fire Department Be prepared to inform
them of the exact location, details of the fire, and chemicals that are stored and used in the area. DO
NOT RE-ENTER THE BUILDING for any reason, until the all clear is given.
A Command Post may be set up near the emergency site. Keep clear of the Command Post unless
you have official business.
Note: Do Not Panic. If you become trapped in a building during a fire, hang an article of clothing from the
window as a marker for rescue crews. If there is no window, stay near the floor where the air will be
less toxic. Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency crews of your location.

In the event a mishap occurs such as an explosion or crashed aircraft at Connecticut College take the
following action:
Take cover under tables, desks and other objects for protection against falling glass or debris.
Report the emergency to Campus Safety at extension 111 or 2222.
Pull the fire alarm to initiate building evacuation.
A Command Post may be set up near the disaster site. Keep clear of the Command Post unless you
have official business.
Do not return to an evacuated building unless told to do so by the Fire Department.
Important: As previously mentioned, after any evacuation, report to your designated assembly point. Stay
there until an accurate headcount is taken and the Incident Commander (IC) tells you it is safe to leave. The
IC or designated employee will take attendance and assist in the accounting for all building occupants.

AILURE
If a major utility failure occurs during regular working hours (8:30 AM through 5:00 PM, Monday through
Friday), immediately notify Physical Plant at extension 2253. If the utility failure occurs after hours,
weekends, or on holidays, notify Campus Safety at extension 111 or 2222. If an emergency exists, activate
the building fire alarms.
Gas Leak - IMMEDIATELY cease all operations, and evacuate the building! DO NOT Switch on or
off, any lights or electrical equipment. Remember, electrical arcing can trigger an explosion! Call
Campus Safety at extension 111 or 2222, from a phone outside of the gas leak area.
Electrical/Light Failure - Emergency lighting systems should provide sufficient illumination to exit
buildings in an orderly manner.
Elevator Failure - If you are trapped in the elevator, use the emergency phone to directly notify
Campus Safety. If the elevator does not have an emergency phone, turn on the emergency alarm to
signal for help. Both are located on the elevator front panel.
Plumbing Failure/Flooding - Cease using all electrical equipment. Notify Campus Safety. If
necessary, vacate the area.
Steam Line Failure - Immediately notify Campus Safety at extension 2222 or operations at extension
2253.
Ventilation Problem - If smoke odors come from the ventilation system, immediately notify the
Campus Safety department at extension 111 or 2222, and Physical Plant at extension 2253. Activate
the alarm system. Cease all operations and evacuate the building until the all clear is given.
Telephone System Failure - Utilizing alternate means of reporting (cell phones, radios or in person),
notify Campus Safety at extension 2222.
