INTRODUCTION
The Crane Electronics Model 9000-0008 is a
RISC microcontroller based three stage RPM switch for
use with Crane HI-6, HI-7, and HI-8 ignitions and other
aftermarket capacitive discharge (CD) systems including
Accel, MSD, and Mallory which provide a 12V tach output
pulse. The Model 9000-0008 may not function correctly if
connected to high voltage pulse tach signals found with
most OE inductive discharge ignitions. It is not compatible
with multi-spark (also called multi-strike) inductive dis-
charge systems such as the Crane HI-6S or Jacobs igni-
tions. The unit cannot be used with any odd firing engines.
Three independent RPM switch levels are digital-
ly set via rotary switches from 500 to 9,900 RPM in 100
RPM increments. A DIP switch is used to select 4, 6, or 8
cylinder operation.
DIAGNOSTIC AND STATUS LEDS
Diagnostic and status LEDs assist in trou-
bleshooting. A power on LED indicates proper +12V
power applied to the unit when the ignition switch is turned
on. A trigger LED blinks during cranking, indicating the
presence of a proper trigger signal. The third RPM switch
stage also has a status LED showing when this output is
activated.
INSTALLATION
All connections must be made with stranded cop-
per wire. Crimp terminals are recommended over solder-
ing, which can make wires brittle near the solder joint.
Make sure all terminals are clean and free of corrosion.
Scrape off paint, dirt, and grease when making connec-
tions to ground.
You will require common hand tools including a
proper wire stripping and crimping tool. Do not attempt to
use pliers to crimp terminals.
WIRING HINTS
Improper grounding can cause intermittent noise
problems. The unit should be grounded only to chassis
ground near the point where the ignition system is ground-
ed. Do not ground the unit directly to the ignition system.
MOUNTING
Do not mount the unit in close proximity to the
ignition system, ignition coil, or spark plug wires. The unit
is fully encapsulated and sealed. It is capable of with-
standing exposure to moisture short of total immersion.
Prolonged exposure to salt spray or high pressure wash-
ers may cause damage. The unit can be mounted under-
hood, away from sources of engine heat, but underdash
mounting is recommended.
WIRING HOOKUP
Refer to Figure 1. Connect the white trigger input
wire to your tach signal. This is the green wire on Crane
HI-6 systems or the tach terminal on most other CD units.
Refer to your ignition system installation instructions for
details.
Connect the red +12V wire to switched +12V. In
most cases you can use the same switched +12V used for
the ignition system. This will be the thin red wire on Crane
HI-6 and MSD-6AL systems. Connect the black ground
wire to chassis ground near the ignition system.
A typical hookup is shown for the stage 1 RPM
switch output. You can use the same hookup for the other
stages or tape up the wires if you are not using all stages.

Connect the RPM switch outputs as shown. Note
that the RPM switch outputs are each limited to 1/2 amp.
The outputs are protected so they cannot be damaged by
overloads. Relays are required to drive large loads such as
nitrous or air shift solenoids. The pinout given is for a stan-
dard 12V automotive relay available at most parts stores.
You can also use Radio-Shack part number 275-226.
If you are connecting a shift light, you must use an
LED type light.
SETUP AND OPERATION
The unit reads the DIP switches and rotary switch-
es when ignition power is first turned on. If you change a
switch setting, you must turn the ignition power off
momentarily for the new setting to become effective.
DIP SWITCH SETTINGS
Verify setting of all DIP switches prior to starting
engine. Use a ball point pen tip to slide the switches.
The top two switches are used to set 4, 6, or 8
cylinder operation. For example, set the top switch off and
the second switch on for 8 cylinders. The third and fourth
(bottom) switches are not used.
RPM SWITCH SETTINGS
Each RPM switch stage is set by two rotary
switches. Settings are X100 engine RPM (i.e. 20 is 2,000
RPM and 99 is 9,900 RPM). The range is 500 to 9,900
RPM. Use a small screwdriver to set the switches. The
RPM switch outputs are normally off and turn on (output
grounded) when the set RPM value is reached.
FINAL CHECK
Before starting the engine for the first time, double
check all electrical connections.
TROUBLESHOOTING OPERATION
Did the engine run properly before installation of
the new Crane unit? If not, remove the unit or install anoth-
er known good unit and then find and correct the original
problem. Did the unit function correctly before the problem
occurred? If the answer is yes, did you change anything
that may have affected it? Try going back to the last setup
that worked ok to help isolate the problem.
If the unit doesnt function correctly, use the fol-
lowing checklist steps:
NO POWER LED WHEN IGNITION IS ON
If the power LED doesn't light up after the ignition
switch is turned on, check power and ground connections.
Use a volt meter to verify +12 volts at the red wire. Also
verify +12 volts when the ignition switch is in the start posi-
tion.
NO RPM SWITCH ACTION
1. If the power LED lights up when the ignition switch is
turned on, verify that the trigger LED blinks while the
engine is cranking.
2. If the trigger LED doesn't blink, the unit is not receiving
a trigger signal from the white wire connected to your
tach signal. Recheck electrical connections.
3. If the trigger LED blinks, recheck RPM values, cylinder
number selection and connections to external devices.
9000-9518
NOTES:
1. Do not connect white trigger input to coil
when using any CD ignition system.
2. Each RPM Stage Output can switch 1/2
amp load to ground. Use Relay as shown
to switch higher loads.
3. Shift Light must be LED type such as
Autometer Model 3239 Mini-Prolite.
4. Tape up unused wires.
