October Lomita Lantern

Lomita Lantern
Dr. Chiquita Watt, Principal Mrs. Barbara County-Branscomb, Magnet Coordinator Mrs. Carlyn Canady, PTA President Lomita Math/Science Magnet School Volume XI Number 4 October 1998 http://lomita.project-inspire.net PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE As you know, the district administered the Stanford 9 Test to all students in Grades 1-10 last year. This test is a standardized normreferenced test. It measures our student achievement levels and yields an individual student score. These results were shared with you during your teacher-parent conference and/or received scores through the U.S. Postal Services. There are many ways to assess a student's achievement level. Standardized tests are only one method and represent only a snapshot of the student on the day he or she took the test. With that in mind, I thought you would be interested in knowing how Lomita fared on this test. While we recognize there is room for improvement, we are pleased that we scored well above the district and cluster's averages. Teachers will soon meet to strategize on different ways to improve these scores for next year. STANFORD 9 COMPOSITE RESULTS Reading Math Language 1996-97 39 46 45 1997-98 48 Respectfully, Chiquita Watt, Ph.D. SUPER CITIZEN Congratulations to the following students who have recently received our Super Citizen Award. We will kick off the week with a special assembly on the yard and at the conclusion all students will tie a red ribbon on the fence facing Narbonne Avenue. Throughout the week we will end with another special assembly on the yard. All of this is possible through the efforts of the PTA and our SANE Officer, Deputy Abbott. NATIONAL PTA REFLECTIONS PROJECT Suddenly you turn around and..... was the topic for the activity. Thank You to all of the boys and girls who participated and all of the parents who attended the reception. The winners will be listed in next month's Lantern. Halloween Festival Fall is in the air!!!! Sooner than you know we'll be turning our clocks back to standard time for Halloween. Our Annual Halloween Festival will take place on Friday, October 30, 1998. I am told that a wonderful time will be had by all during this fun activity for family and friends! So put on your costume and join us for a great day. Be on the lookout for a bulletin that will come home the week of October 26th with all the details. In the meantime, if you would like to help with the Festival, the Haunted House or make a donation please call the school at (310) 3261655. This takes a lot of work and our PTA can use everybody's help. SCHOOL SITE/ LOCAL SCHOOL LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MEETINGS The next Local School Leadership Council Meeting is scheduled for October 20, 1998 at 7:00 in the school auditorium. These meetings are open and all are invited to attend. All committees of the LSLC meet each month on the second Tuesday in the auditorium at 3:00pm. SAFETY IS NUMBER 1 ALWAYS Parents continue to work with us in reminding students to be aware of strangers. If your child is at home they must report strangers to you, if they are are school they are to report strangers to an adult as soon as possible. Safety is our number one concern! We would like to remind you of some of the policies as it pertains to students arrival and dismissal. For the safety and security of your children we ask that all students who ride the bus enter the bus gate on Narbonne Avenue. Students grades 1-5, who walk or are transported by private automobile should enter through the Moon Street gate. Kindergarten students should enter through the kindergarten door on 247th Street. Students may not enter the school through the main building doors without an adult before school begins. After school begins or during rainy weather students may enter through the main building door. Gates/doors will be opened in the morning from 7:55am to 8:30am to allow students to enter thr school. At 8:30am all gates except, the front doors will be locked and remain locked until dismissal time at 2:40pm. We find that by following these procedures students are better supervised and are secure and fewer problems develop. Thank you for your cooperation in adhering to these policies! PARENT VOLUNTEER HOURS We had 170 volunteer hours during September. We will keep you informed with the number of hours volunteered by parents on a monthly bases. If you would like to volunteer please call the school and leave a message for either Jackie Lopez or Jeanne Diaz. Thanks!
