ACTG 301
Spring Semester, 2001
This schedule is tentative, and may be adjusted during the course of the semester. Students should refer to the
website for a current schedule.
Monday, January 8: Introduction, General Concepts
Students should review (and if necessary, complete) Tutorials 1 and 2 in the Windows section of the Excel textbook,
comprising pages Win98 1.1 through Win98 2.30.
Before the January 10 class, students should review (and if necessary, complete) Tutorials 1-3 of the Excel Sections,
comprising pages EX 1.01 through EX 3.42. Student should come to class January 10 prepared to apply the techniques
covered in the three Excel tutorials.
Wednesday, January 10: Application of techniques: Formula buildling by pointing, Fill handles, Quickfill, F4
key, Autosum, Quickformat panel, Format painter, Accounting vs. Currency formats, Print areas, Tab naming,
Gridlines, Cell comments, Slanted column headings, Wrapping text within a cell, Borders & colors, Drawing toolbar,
Portrait/Landscape orientation. Also, introduction to the Help system
Students should ensure they have mastered the application of the techniques listed above.
Students should use the Help system to teach themselves and their groups the use of VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP functions,
and the =IF() function, and come to class January 12 prepared to apply these functions.
Friday, January 12: In-class Sample Evaluation (will not count for grade). Some applications of VLOOKUP,
HLOOKUP and =IF() functions in accounting problems.
Students should practice using the functions and gain speed and mastery in application.
Monday, January 15: Martin Luther King Day University classes will not meet.
Students should continue to work on mastery and speed, and be prepared to take a timed performance evaluation on January
17.
Before the January 17 class, students should review and complete Tutorial 4, comprising pages EX 4.01 through 4.42.
Students should come to class prepared to apply the techniques covered.
Wednesday, January 17: Evaluation #1, timed in-class individual evaluation. Introduction to Charting Concepts,
application of techniques: Selecting the proper type of chart, Chart wizard, Revising chart series, Non-adjacent
ranges, Exploding a pie slice, Texture effects on charts
Students should practice the techniques covered in Excel Tutorials 1-4, and work on building speed in recognizing the
appropriateness of the tools for given problems.
Student should practice charting techniques, and become proficient in Chart creation, operation, and revision.
Student should complete Tutorials 5 and come to class January 19 prepared to apply List techniques.
Friday, January 19: Application of List operations: Sort, Quicksort, Zoom, Forms, Filters, Conditional
Formatting, Labels in Formulas, Subtotals buttons, Page Breaks, Column headings on each page.
Students should practice the techniques covered in Tutorials 1-5 to increase speed.
Monday, January 22: Regression applications, statistical analysis.
Students should practice regression analysis by completing the assigned exercise.
Students should review the Pivot Table section of Tutorial 5, pages EX 5.34 to EX 5.54 and come to class January 24 ready to
apply the Pivot Table operations.
Wednesday, January 24: Evaluation #2, Timed In-Class Evaluation. Demonstration of complex accounting
problem solution. Issuance of Evaluation #3 (take-home individual evaluation).
Students should work individually and without assistance to complete Evaluation #3.
Student should continue to practice Pivot Table operation, and continue working on speed.
Friday, January 26: No class meeting. (This day might be used as a snow-day makup)
Students should complete Tutorial 6, comprising pages EX 6.01 - 6.46 and come to class January 29 prepared to integrate
Excel data with other Windows applications.
Monday, January 29: Evaluation #3 Due. Integration of Excel data with other applications. Review of Material
covered to date. Special Topics.
Students should complete Tutorial 7 and come to class January 31 prepared to build an Excel application.
Wednesday, January 31: Application development concepts, Sectionalizing spreadsheets, Protection of cells,
Initial values, Edit/validation, Error messages, Range names, Autofill, Macro Recording, Macro button operation.
Issuance of Evaluation #4 (take-home).
Students should work individually and without assistance to complete the first part of Evaluation #4.
Friday, February 2: Applications of working with multiple worksheets and workbooks.
Students should complete Evaluation #4 individually, and submit the files by noon on Monday, February 5.
Monday, February 5: No Class Meeting
Students must submit completed Evaluation #4 (folling the instructions on the evaluation) by noon on February 5.
Wednesday, February 7: No Class Meeting
Students should complete Tutorials 9 and 10, and come to class February 9 prepared to practice scenario analysis.
Friday, February 9: Evaluation #5, Timed In-Class Evaluation. Data Tables and Scenario Analysis,
Introduction to Solver.
Students should complete Tutorial 11 before class February 12.
Monday, February 12: Importing Data into Excel Spreadsheets
Student should spend significant time within groups testing each other to ensure that all group members have gained
proficiency and speed in using all Excel techniques covered to date.
Wednesday February 14: In-class exercise: Comprehensive Problem in Excel
Student should continue spending significant time within groups testing each other to ensure that all group members have
gained proficiency and speed in using all Excel techniques covered to date.
Friday, February 16: No class Meeting. This day might be used as a snow day makeup day.
Monday, February 19: Evaluation #6, Timed, In-Class Evaluation. Introduction to Databases and Access
Students should peruse Tutorials 1 through 3 of the Access section of the Access Book, comprising pages AC 1.01 through
3.24, and understand the relationships between tables, queries, forms, and reports.
Wednesday, February 21: Demonstration of Access Fundamentals, In-class exercise
Friday, February 23: No Class Meeting
Students should complete the homework assignment in Access, and come to class February 26 with any questions they might
have on the techniques.
Monday February 26: In-class exercise in Access.
Wednesday, February 28: Final evaluation#7.
