Control Options
The Model G-89 gives
you a choice in control options for
your specific operation. The gate
can be activated by a variety of
control devices, including card
readers, coin and/or token control
units, remote push buttons, keys,
tickets, radio transmitters, cash
registers, fee computers, or vehicle
detectors with buried inductance
loops. All electrical control relays
are supplied in a factory sealed, plug-
in controller which is readily
changeable as a self-contained
package.
Durable Construction
The Model G-89 is extremely
durable, protected from harsh
environments with a cabinet
constructed from heavy-gauge, cold-
rolled steel and armored with an
element-resistant paint. A single
access door with weatherproof gasket
provides access to all internal
hardware for easy service and
installation.

The gate is driven by a 1/3 HP, 115

service. Cranks and connecting rods
are constructed of solid steel, and all
internal moving parts are plated to
prevent rust and corrosion.
The Model G-89 Barrier Gate
features a 250 watt heater strip with
thermostat. Control switches (on,
off and thermostat) automatically
control the heat settings in cold
weather.
Sensitive Reversing Edge
The optional Sensitive Reversing
Edge with timer ensures that the
gate arm automatically reverses its
downward motion should any object
be struck by the gate arm during its
downward motion. Should an
object be struck, the gate arm
returns to its upright position and
remains upright until it is
automatically reset by the preset
timer control (an optional variable
timer). This feature is activated by a

Model G-89 Barrier Gate
Specifications
1. Purpose
The Model G-89 Barrier Gate shall be
an electromechanical parking control
device that shall restrict access within a
vehicle traffic lane by means of a wooden
gate arm. The gate shall be activated by a
vend signal from an access or revenue
control device.
2. Features/Functions
a. The Federal APD Model G-89
Barrier Gate shall raise when
activated and lower when deactivated
by either manual or automatic means.
b. The Model G-89 Barrier Gate shall
be UL Listed (Canada/U.S.) and CSA
Listed.
3. Dimensions
a. The Model G-89 Barrier Gate shall
be 15 inches W x 42 inches H x 15
inches D (381mm W x 1067mm H x
381mm D) with a flange arm height
of 35

inches (902mm) so as to
prevent compact or subcompact
vehicles from passing under the arm
when in the closed position.
4. Electrical
a. Power input requirements shall be
115 VAC at 15 Amperes as standard.
Other power requirements shall be
available as specified.
b. All electrical components shall be
supplied in a factory sealed, plug-in
controller, which shall be readily
changeable as a package.
c. A zinc-plated connection box shall be
provided for all factory wired
connections. It shall have a 115 VAC
grounded convenience outlet, with a
250 watt strip heater with control
switch and preset thermostat. The
switch positions for the heater shall
include "Thermostat" (which
automatically controls the heat in
cold weather), "OFF" (which turns
the heater off completely), and "ON"
(which bypasses the thermostat and
keeps the heater on).
d. The connection box shall provide an
"Auto-Manual" switch to test the
motor and limit switches, or to raise
the gate manually.
e. The connection box shall provide an
"OFF/ON" switch to control the
power supply for the entire gate
system (except loop detectors, when
used).
f. The motor shall have built-in
overload switch protection.
5. Construction
a. The Model G-89 Barrier Gate cabinet
shall be constructed of 12 gauge, cold-
rolled steel and finished in a powder
coat paint in either Federal APD
Safety Yellow or Federal APD White
(as specified) for maximum visibility
and safety. Other colors shall be
available when specified.
b. The cabinet shall have one gasketed
door with flush mounted, T-handle
lock with one gate door key.
c. A nylon gasket shall be mounted
between the gate cabinet and
mounting surface to prevent
corrosion.
d. The Federal APD Model G-89 gate
arm shall be constructed of wood and
finished in diagonal stripes of black
and white enamel paint. A two-sided
warning label, which wraps around
the gate arm, shall be provided.
e. The gate shall be equipped with a
break-away gate arm flange, which
consists of a knife edge and a clamp
assembly to ensure a clean break.
6. Mechanical
a. The Model G-89 Barrier Gate shall be
driven by a

HP, heavy-duty, 115
VAC, single phase instant reversing
motor, connected by double V-belts
to a heavy-duty, 60:1 single reduction
speed reducer. Other power
requirements shall be available as
specified.
b. Power shall be transmitted to the gate
arm drive shaft through harmonic
acting crank and connection rod.

c. Adjustable cams shall be provided to
allow adjustment of gate arm travel.
d. Cranks, connecting rod and main
shaft shall be of solid steel
construction and be suitably plated
to inhibit rusting.
e. Mechanical action shall be such that
mechanical stops or braking devices
are not required.
7. Options
a. A Sensitive Reversing Edge with
timer shall be available. This feature
shall ensure that the gate arm shall
automatically reverse its downward
motion should any object be struck
by the gate arm during its descent.
The gate shall immediately return to
the upright position and remain up
until automatically reset by the preset
timer control (an optional variable
timer). This feature shall be activated
by a mechanical sensing switch.
b. A folding gate arm shall be available.
This feature shall be required when
overhead ceiling clearance in a garage
is at a minimum. The folding arm's
unique action shall allow it to be fully
extended when in the down (or
closed) position. When in the up (or
open) position, the arm's folding
action shall allow it to stay below the
ceiling's boundaries.
