March 19, 2008 (St. Louis) HEC-TV receives a grant for more than $12,000
from the Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) in support of our exclusive series
HEC-TV Live! Thanks to this generous grant from MHC for HEC-TV Live! The
Gateway City, our viewers will have an opportunity to implement HEC-TVs slogan
It Makes You Think. Four programs will focus on the passage of people to, through
or within St. Louis, as well as vertical movement up and down the social scale. The
episodes, built around the overall theme of movement, will premiere in September
with shows following once a quarter.
HEC-TV will produce four interactive programs to connect our engaged viewers with
experts on a variety of subjects relating to St. Louis history. Using an array of
innovative technological tools, HEC-TV Live! will connect viewers with humanities
scholars through videoconferencing, television and the Internet. Viewers participate
in the live discussion through web cameras, videoconference units, email and by
phone. Family curriculum materials will be developed and posted on our website in
advance so families can participate in additional discussion from home. Since our
programs are brought directly into the viewers homes via television and the Internet,
HEC-TV Live! may be accessed by anyone across the state or nation.
Our first program, HEC-TV Live! The Gateway City: Passage to Freedom, takes a
deeper look at freedom suitslegal petitions for freedom by people of color. We will
begin with a screening of Seeking Freedom, our exclusive documentary focusing on
these suits. Then, experts from the St. Louis Circuit Court Historical Records Project
will join us for a live discussion in which viewers can weigh in on the value and
importance of the historical records.
HEC-TV Live! The Gateway City: Passage to Possibilities, follows a similar format
and explores what motivated the immigrants who came to America through St. Louis.
Again, representatives from the St. Louis Circuit Court Historical Records Project will
HEC-TV is St. Louis leading producer of education, arts, and cultural
television programming. The channel receives major funding from The
St. Louis County Cable Television Education Commission and is
programmed by the Higher Education Consortium of Metropolitan St.
Louis. HEC-TVs mission is: To strengthen and promote the education,
arts, and cultural communities in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

Our third installment in this series, HEC-TV Live! The Gateway City: Passage to
Progress, will focus on the significance of St. Louis to the transportation industry. In
our citys role as the Gateway to the West, all means of transportation are important
to St. Louis heritage. We will have scholars from the Museum of Transportation and
the Missouri History Museum as our guests for this program.
Our final installment, HEC-TV Live! The Gateway City: Passage to Hope, will return
to the topic of immigration, looking at the present and future. St. Louis is now home
to many different peoples: Bosnians, Hispanics and Rwandans, to name just a few.
Representatives from the International Institute and recent immigrants will be our
guest experts.
The Missouri Humanities Council is the only state wide agency in Missouri devoted
exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state
affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1981. Thanks again to
