WORD Sketch
A high-productivity user interface that makes it easier
and faster to access and understand the circuit details
stored in the Telcordia
TIRKS
®
system
The Critical Need for Fast
Access to Circuit Data
Before field technicians can install
new circuits, they must refer to a
Work Order Record and Details
(WORD) document within the
TIRKS system to obtain critical cir-
cuit details. Developed by Telcordia
Technologies, the TIRKS system is
an integrated Operations Support
System (OSS) that inventories,
designs, and assigns transport
facilities and equipment. As com-
munications networks have grown
in complexity, however, so too has
the complexity of circuit designs.
For example, with increased use
of Synchronous Optical Network
(SONET), a customers circuit
has gone from a simple linear col-
lection of circuit elements to a
complex medley of elements with
such non-linear characteristics as
ring configurations and drop and
continue paths.
With the introduction of newer,
more complex technologies, the
text-based WORD document has
become increasingly more difficult
for personnel to understand and
use for circuit installation and
maintenance. This is a serious
concern in todays highly competi-
tive market where fast response is
essential to winning and retaining
customers.
To address this issue, Telcordia
TIRKS
®
WORD Sketch, a pow-
erful Graphical User Interface
(GUI) was developed to allow
users to quickly and easily
sketch circuit details in a way
that provides a clear end-to-
end view, including such things
as timeslot assignment and
cross-connects required. It also
identifies the facilities and circuits
that are assigned to individual
equipment, resulting in more effi-
cient utilization of equipment as
well as remaining spare capacity.
Benefits
TIRKS WORD Sketch helps you:
Meet tight installation schedules
Speed network provisioning
Reduce the number of installa-
tion and maintenance errors
Reduce required training times
Heighten customer satisfaction
Lower operating expenses.
TIRKS WORD Sketch helps you
improve provisioning through
alignment of vendor and TIRKS
system equipment numbering. The
easy-to-follow work instructions
can reduce the number of erro-
neous work steps and other instal-
lation and maintenance errors,
and the subsequent rework. By
reducing the training time required
by technicians to understand the
circuit design and WORD docu-
ment, TIRKS WORD Sketch lowers
operating expenses by allowing
the use of less skilled technicians.
TIRKS WORD Sketch can increase
customer satisfaction by reducing
the number of service disruptions,
and by enabling fast response
through rapid identification of cus-
tomer and circuit data on affected
equipment or nodes. Operating
expenses can be lowered as a
result of this increased efficiency.
Description and Features
TIRKS WORD Sketch provides
both Microsoft
®
Windows
®
-based
and Web-based access to a graph-
ical view of the TIRKS Work Order
Record and Details (WORD)
document, SONET and Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(DWDM) networks, Add-Drop
Multiplexers (ADMs) and various
reports. TIRKS WORD Sketch
accesses real time TIRKS system
circuit and network data. Zoom in
and out capabilities are provided,
and all graphical views can be sent
to a printer. A drill-down capability
is also provided so navigation from
one view to another is accom-
plished by a simple mouse click.
There are several graphical views:
Circuit View:
provides a graphical
linear sketch of all circuit types.
It displays all equipment locations
in the sequence available on the
WORD document, and illustrates
each path of a two-path circuit
separately. It also displays the
required data for each equipment
and facility assignment along the
circuit transmission path. Addi-
tionally it translates TIRKS system
assignment designations into
equipment vendor nomenclature
via user-controlled tables. The
Circuit View provides drill-down
capability to the Network View.
Network View:
provides a graph-
ical sketch of SONET networks
and DWDM networks. Included
with the SONET network sketch
is component Intelligent Network
Elements (INEs) and subtending
networks. Network View also
uses table-driven translations.
These user-controlled tables pro-
vide the ability to translate TIRKS
system assignment designations
(equipment HECIG codes and unit
numbers) into equipment supplier
designations (equipment names
and port numbers). The Network
View provides drill-down capability
to the Circuit View, the ADM View,
the Reports Views, and to another
Network View for any subtending
network.
Composite View:
combines parts
of the Circuit View with parts of
the Network View. The Composite
View displays the entrance and exit
points on each SONET or DWDM
network utilized by the circuit. If
the circuit is a two-path circuit, the
Composite View graphically depicts
both paths side-by-side. The Com-
posite View provides drill-down
capability to the Network View.
Achieve Dramatic Savings with WORD Sketch
WORD Sketch can help enable service providers to achieve dramatic
operational savings. By:
decreasing by 50% the errors caused by reading a WORD document
given a 1% rework rate per location
eliminating the need for senior technicians to manually sketch out
complex orders for junior technicians to install, and
reducing the time required by junior technicians to analyze simple
circuit orders from 5 minutes to 3 minutes.
WORD Sketch can achieve up to a $2.4 million savings per year
assuming the above criteria and:
20,000 circuit orders per month
3 work locations per order (average)
A $45/per hour rate for senior technicians
A $40/per hour rate for junior technicians.

ADM View:
provides a graphical
sketch of all the ADM cards that
are defined as assignable in the
TIRKS system. The ADM cards
with actual assignments are dis-
played with a button. Drilling
down using these buttons pro-
duces the ADM Drop Port Assign-
ments report for each ADM card.
This report can also be produced
for the entire ADM.
Reports Views:
provides drill-
down capability to the Circuit
View, the Composite View, and
from one Report View to another.
In fact, for higher level circuits
displayed on the report one may
repeatedly drill down to see the
assignments for the circuit until
the lowest-level assignments are
reached. Reports Views include:
Optical Facility Assignments
Report
VT Assignments Report
Carrier Assignments Report
Spare STS Bandwidth Report
Spare VT Bandwidth Report.
WORD Document View:
displays
the textual WORD document the
data that is downloaded from the
TIRKS mainframe databases and
used by TIRKS WORD Sketch in
the creation of the Circuit View
and the Composite View.
Platform
TIRKS WORD Sketch is available
on both a two- and three-tier plat-
form, each requiring the TIRKS
application and TIRKS logon as
prerequisites. The two-tier system,
designed to operate on an IBM-
compatible PC running Microsoft
Windows 95
®
or Windows NT
®
,
communicates directly with the
MVS mainframe. The three-tier
system, designed to operate from
a frames-capable Web browser,
communicates with the MVS main-
frame through a Windows NT-
based Web server, and requires
that the PC or workstation have
a frames-capable Web browser
installed.
