conditions. We work around the clock to overcome obstacles presented by
bad weather and to keep operating as normally as possible. We appreciate

PVTA VAN SERVICE
During severe winter storms, all paratransit trips will be cancelled, with the
exception of trips to transport passengers to medical facilities for life-
sustaining treatments. Those trips will be provided, while giving primary
consideration to the ultimate safety of passengers and operators. Any
cancellations of paratransit service are reported immediately to radio and
television stations, the PVTAs Information Center, at 781-PVTA, and the
PVTA Web site, at
www.pvta.com
BUS SNOW DETOURS
Our winter storm plan kicks in at the first indication that snow is on the way.
In most cases, we are able to provide service with minimal disruptions, but
during severe storms we may need to activate bus snow detours. Routes that
have especially challenging conditions such as hills or narrow streets need to
be altered for safetys sake in stormy weather, We report activated snow
detours immediately to area radio and television stations, the PVTAs
Information Center, at 781-PVTA, and the PVTA Web site, at
www.pvta.com.
The following routes are subject to snow bus detours, which may be
activated as shown if weather demands.
Green 1 Cannon Circle detour. Service will terminate at Five Town Plaza;
no service to Cannon Circle.
Green 2 Cottage Street/ Dwight Road/ Stop & Shop detour. Service will
terminate at Big Y. No service to Cottage Street, Dwight Road or Stop &
Shop. No service to East Longmeadow Industrial Park or Sunbridge.
Green 3 Franklin Street/King Westford Circle detour. Bus will serve Tri-
Towers and will use Liberty Street in both directions. No service to Franklin
Street or King Westford Circle.
Green 5 Bus will use Dickinson Street to Converse Street to the Jewish
Nursing Home and back via Dickinson. No service to Tiffany Street, Dwight
Road or Genesis House.
Blue 4 No service to Clyde/Sanderson Street. Bus will use Plainfield
Street detour.
Blue 6 Williams Street/Pasco Road detour. Bus will travel on Berkshire
Avenue in both directions and terminate either at Center Street or Hubbard
Street. No service to Williams Street or Pasco Road.
Blue 7 Independence House/Big Y detour. Bus will travel on Boston Road
in both directions. No service to Independence House or Big Y.
Blue 15 Northeast Utilities/ Tremont Street/Christopher Court detour.
Cambridge St./Oak Grove/Burr detour. Bus will use Page Boulevard to East
Street to Carew Street. No service to NU, Tremont Street or Christopher
Court.
Red 10 Western Massachusetts Hospital/Noble Street detour. Bus will
travel along Main Street to Park Square. No service to Western Mass.
Hospital or Noble Street.
Purple 11 Kids Place/Dwight Street and East Court Street detour. No
service to the Kids Place at Holyoke Community College. Service will
terminate at Springfield Bus Terminal. No service to Dwight Street and East
Court Street.
Blue 13 No service to Quarry Hill or Brownstone Apartments.
Red 14 Pheasant Hill/Industrial Drive/Heritage Nursing Home detour. Bus
will travel on main streets only, No service to Pheasant Hill, the Industrial
Park or Heritage Nursing Home.
Blue 17 Bradley Road/Colonial Estates/ Springdale Mall, Glendale Road
detour. Bus will travel along Parker Street and Boston Road to the Eastfield
Mall and back. No service to Bradley Road, Colonial Estates, or Fernbank
Road.
Green 19 Job Corps detour. Bus will travel along main roads. No service
to Job Corps.
Purple 20 Industrial Park/Tokeneke Road/ K Mart Plaza, Dwight Street
and East Court Street detour. Bus will travel along Riverdale Road, Whiting
Farms Road and South Street to Veterans Park. Service will terminate at
Springfield Bus Terminal. No service to Interstate Drive, Tokeneke Road,
KMart Plaza or South Street Plaza.
Purple 21 Linden Towers/Baystate Medical Center/Meetinghouse Road
detour. Bus will travel along main roads only. No service to Linden Towers,
Baystate Medical Center or Meetinghouse Road.
Blue 23 Holyoke Community College/Jarvis Avenue/University Park
Apartments/Kids Place detour. Service will operate along main roads only.
No service to HCC, Jarvis Avenue and University Park Apartments.
Red 24 Essex Street/Holyoke Hospital/St. Kolbe Drive/Chestnut Street
detour. Bus will travel along Appleton Street and Northampton Street on its
way from Veterans Park. No service along Essex Street, to Holyoke
Hospital, St. Kobe or Chestnut Street.
Red 25 Flats detour. There will be no service to the Flats area of Holyoke.
Red 27 Fernbank Road /Dipping Hole Road/Tinkham Road detour. Bus
will travel along Boston Road in both directions, No service to Fernbank
Road, Dipping Hole Road or Tinkham Road.
Pink 31 Buses will not serve the Boulders and South Point Apartment
complexes. Instead buses will turn around by taking a right onto Trimwood
Lane off East Hadley Road, detouring around that residential neighborhood
and returning to East Hadley Road via Columbia Drive. Service for the
Boulders and South Point residents would occur at a temporary stop posted
on the corner of Trimwood Lane and at the bus stop along East Hadley
Road.
Green 32 Pine Street/ Mill Hollow Apartments detour. Bus will not turn
onto Sand Hill Road to Mill Hollow Apartments. Instead it travels down
Pine Street to the intersection with North Pleasant Street, Service would
resume at the North Amherst bus stop.
Blue 34/35 Orchard Hill snow detour. Buses in both directions remain on
East Pleasant Street. No service at Orchard Hill at either Clark Hill Road or
Orchard Hill Drive.
Admission Center detour Buses in both directions remain on Olympia
Drive. No service up the hill to the Admissions Center.
Orange 38 -- The Notch detour. When the Notch is closed, buses travel
from Mount Holyoke College to Hampshire College via Route 47. Buses
will service stops between Hampshire College and the University of
Massachusetts. There is no service to MHC during severe weather
conditions.
Maroon 40Bay Road/Massachusetts Avenue/Haigus Mall detour, buses
will discontinue any detours serving Bay Road and remain on Route 9.
Buses will discontinue serving Haigus Mall Circle if necessary.
Red 41 Route 5/Holyoke Community College detour. Use of Route 141
over Mount Tom Hill may be discontinued. Buses will use Route 5 to HCC
or discontinue service to HCC. Students may use Blue 23 to Veterans Park
and transfer to Blue 48 for transit to Northampton area.
Red 42 Leeds/ Veterans Affairs Medical Center /Williamsburg/ VA Center
(Leeds) detour. Discontinuance of service to Leeds (Front and Leonard
streets). Possible inability to use VA Center entrance, Possible missed trips
or discontinuance of service to Williamsburg. VA Center (Leeds) pickups
and discharges on Route 9 entrance drive.
Blue 43Amherst College/Haigus Mall/Amherst College detour. Bypass
Amherst College stop and use Amherst Common as necessary. Possible
UMass pickup at Massachusetts Avenue (discontinuance of Haigus Mall
Circle use).
Red 44Meadowbrook Apartments/King Street/Florence Heights/High
Street/Barrett and Jackson Streets/Fruit Street/Academy of Music detour.
Discontinuance of Meadowbrook Apartments area service. Use of Indian
Circle and pickup of Florence Heights passengers. Possible discontinuance
of Florence Heights area and Nonotuck Street service.
Blue 48 Possible delays or missed trips.
BEING PREPARED HELPS EVERYONE
To get the most out of PVTA bus service during snowy weather, follow
these tips:
Please have your fare ready as you board buses.
Allow extra time for travel to your destination and back.
On warm buses, loosen your coat and/or scarf to prevent overheating.
And please walk slowly and carefullynever run -- at or around bus stops
and anywhere you go in slippery conditions.
