Presidents Message
The summer has finally come with all of its heat and humidity-the dog
days, perhaps, although the dogs are telling me they do not like too much
heat either. They have complained about snow, rain, rain, rain, and now
heat. I loved the snow because I had an excuse to stay inside and sew.
I liked the rain because of the same thing. Can I like the heat any less??
Of course not! My home is air conditioned.

The summer also brings trips to MAQ and Quilt Odyssey, the lake and
beach and the adults who were formerly known as my children. The
summer will also bring the county fair where we are again working to
finish quilts for children in the fairs air conditioned meeting room right
near the cafeteria. Everyone is invited to come join us for as long as you
like on the 13th of August, and anyone who has a partly finished ABC
quilt or some tops you would like to donate (or fabric for backings) wed
love them.
This year we have great speakers coming and a great quilt show in the
works (if we can find someone to coordinate it) and good ongoing efforts
by small groups and our ABC coordinator to provide service to the
community. I would love to see the guild do even more in this area and
welcome ideas and offers. The day at the county fair is a good start.
My secret sister has been busy also and has found the most wonderful
silly chicken with a quilt on her back. I just love her and the fabric she
sent. How lucky I am to have a sister like her. I hope the rest of you who
have secret sisters are having as much fun as I am finding just the right
trinket or fabric. I love to shop with an excuse. Sandy DAngelo FSQ Quiltline

years display. Lauren Kingsland is curating the show,

FSQ SPONSORS AWARD AT
MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAIR
THANK YOU GIFT FROM WINNERS
OF RAFFLE QUILT
KEEP COOL WHILE QUILTING AT THE
MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAIR--AUGUST 13
Last years Quilt Day at the Montgomery County Fair was
so successful that we will do it again. On Wednesday,
August 13, 9:00am to 9:00pm, FSQ will sponsor this event.
Fair-goers will be invited into the air-conditioned comfort of
the Garden Room to tie quilts destined for children through
the ABC quilts program.
FSQ members will prepare the quilt sandwiches on
Sunday, August 10, 1:00-5:00pm, location to be determined.
On Wednesday the 13th, members are needed to help direct
the volunteers, machine sew bindings on the tied quilts, and
ensure that each quilt is labeled.
If you would like to be a part of this effort, sign up at the
Guild meeting, or contact Sandy DAngelo, Coralyn
Colladay, or Rose Remund.
Fair passes will be available for those who volunteer for at
least two hours. Those who work at least four hours will
receive a food coupon worth $3.00. All participants will earn
hours toward membership in the Montgomery County
Agricultural Fair board. High school students can earn
service hours.
Good News: This effort will not only result in many quilts for
the ABC kids, but will also give the Guild a reduced rental
rate for the 2004 Quilt Show. See you at the Fair!!
FSQ is sponsoring a $25 award for the Best Large Quilt in
the Montgomery County Fair. Capital Quilts sponsors an
award for the Best Wall Quilt. (FSQ also sponsors a $50
award at the Maryland State Fair.)
Be sure to enter your quilt in the Fair!
The Montgomery County Fair is looking for a volunteer(s) to
become the Quilting Department chair at the Fair in 2004,
and to shadow the current chair this year to learn the ropes.
Interested persons should contact Barbara Cannizzo,
Superintendent of Home Arts, at 301-253-4659.

The winners of FSQs 2003 Raffle Quilt, Jack & Linne
Lindquist, from Bemidji, Minnesota, sent five quilting books
and two of Earlene Fowlers novels to FSQ as a thank you
gift after they received the raffle quilt.
What a nice way for them to say thank you, and what a
wonderful addition to FSQs library. The books are:
Q is for Quilt by McClun and Nownes
Quilting with the Muppets
Quilting Back to Front by Scouler
Two-for-One Foundation Piecing by Hill
Magical Four-Patch and Nine-Patch Quilts by Porcella
Arkansas Traveler and Steps to the Altar
by Earlene Fowler
