PWM Controller
The IR3624 from Interna-
tional Recti er is a 600-kHz
single-phase synchronous
buck PWM controller IC
designed for high-density,
10-A nonisolated point-of-
load (POL) regulators. The
600-kHz switching frequency
enables the use of a reduced
footprint inductor and fewer
output capacitors, saving
board area.
For system robustness,
the IR3624 features inte-
grated thermal shutdown
and programmable overcur-
rent limit protection. The
IR3624 includes a 0.6-V volt-
age reference. For applica-
tions below 5 A, even higher
density can be achieved by
using one SO-8 dual n-chan-
nel HEXFET MOSFET such
as the IRF8910 to replace the
two stand-alone MOSFETs
and further shrink the board
area to within 150 mm

T h e S T K 8 0 0 2 0 - A
and STK850 30-A power
MOSFETs are the rst power
devices from STMicroelec-
tronics to be assembled in
the metal-topped PolarPAK
package. The devices occupy
the same 5-mm
6-mm
board area as a standard
SO-8 package, and with an
even lower profile of just
0.8 mm as a result of both top
and bottom heat-dissipation
paths.

STK850s leadframe and
plastic encapsulation are
similar to those used for most
standard power MOSFET
packages, ensuring good die
protection and easy han-
dling in manufacturing.
The devices are manufac-
tured using STs STripFET
technology to achieve very
low on-resistance and losses
while using less silicon area.
Typical R
DS(ON)
of the STK800
is 6 m and of the STK850 is
2.9 m, at 10 V.
The STK800 is priced at
$1.20 each and the STK850
at $1.60 each in quantities
of 1000.

DC-DC Converters
C&D Technologies has added low-
output voltage models to its UWR
7-15W series of high-density, single-out-
put isolated dc-dc converters. The models
provide output current at voltages below
2 V in a standard 1-in. 2-in. package.
Available with output voltages of
1.2 V, 1.5 V and 1.8 V, the devices deliver
a continuous output current of up to 6 A.
Input voltage ranges are available in 9 V
to 18 V; 18 V to 36V; and 36 V to 75 V.
By combining a high-frequency,
synchronous-recti er topology with the
latest components and proven SMT-on-
pc board construction, the UWR 7-15W
series gives highly reliable and highly
ef cient (up to 88%) performance.
The newly added dc-dc converters are
fully isolated (1500 Vdc) with numerous
protection features that help reduce the
need for additional external circuitry.
Packaged in a low-cost, lightweight
UL94V-0-rated plastic package, the UWR
7-15W series achieves EMC compliance
through low-noise design rather than
costly metal shielding solutions. Volume
pricing is in the range of $35 each.

rays to include 0.5% and 0.1% tolerances.
The RAV16-4D series is an isolated resis-
tor network consisting of four 0603-size
resistors in a single 1206-size package.
The RAV16-4D series is offered in
standard E24 values from 10 to 1 M,
though the value range is limited for
tighter tolerances. Tolerances of 1% and
0.5% are available in E24 values from
10 to 330 k, and 0.1% tolerance is
available in E24 values from 100 to
33 k. Custom values may be available
upon request. It has an operating voltage
of 75 V and a power rating of 63 mW
per element.
Standard packaging for the RAV16-
4D series is 5000 pieces per reel, with
typical pricing from $5 per thousand
for 5% tolerance to $0.25 each for 0.1%
tolerance.

Battery-Monitoring Sensor
LEMs Sentinel is a comprehensive
battery-monitoring sensor, designed for
standby batteries. The sensor measures
voltage and impedance per cell, and of-
fers the ability to monitor the internal
temperature of individual cells.
The LEM Sentinel sensors feature a
custom intelligent system-on-chip device
that processes the signal and interfaces to
the digital S-Bus control bus. Monitoring
voltage, current and impedance allows
users to accurately predict which cells
are likely to fail. Monitoring temperature
allows engineers to ensure that the life-
time of the batteries is maximized, as well
as that thermal runaway situations can be
detected and corrected.
LEM also offers interface module kits,
a low-cost, stand-alone monitor and a
pc board that can be integrated into
OEM equipment. PC-based software
that allows for the analysis of readings
is available as source code for use in
battery-monitoring systems.

Chip-Scale LDO
The AS13985 from Austriamicrosys-
tems is an ultralow dropout regulator
optimized to deliver improved operating
times in battery-powered portable equip-
ment. The devices are designed to extend
the talk and standby time of mobile cell
phones as a result of its extremely low
dropout voltage (LDO).
The AS13985 LDO regulator is sold
in a miniature wafer-level chip-scale
package (WL-CSP), which means that
the silicon itself is placed directly on the
pc board. The device features extraor-
dinarily low noise of only 30 µVrms
between 10 Hz and 100 kHz. This allows
the use of a small and less expensive 1-µF
ceramic output capacitor. With a supply
voltage rejection performance of 60 dB at
1 kHz and 55 dB at 10 kHz, the AS13985
perfectly ful lls the noise requirements
for mobile phone applications.
The AS13985 device is available in a
