Detailed Design Information
This design information is intended for OEM product designers that are integrating the IPm engine into
their own product designs. Mechanical and electrical design data is provided for this purpose. Information
in these pages is not needed by system designers are using our pre-integrated IPm products.
1.1 General Description
The IPm CPU board is a compact design that includes an industrially rated PowerPC (MPC855T) and all
memory components needed to run an embedded Linux operating system and application software. Two
Flash file systems (one being optional) are provided along with 32 bit wide dynamic RAM for program
execution. Battery backed static RAM is also provided for quick access to non-volatile memory. The IPm
CPU board has a real-time clock, one 10/100 Ethernet port interface and four flexible serial port interfaces
(one of which may be configured as an additional 10 Megabit Ethernet port). In addition, a number of
features such as an I
2
C interface are provided and are detailed in this document. A data sheet for the
MPC855T PowerPC microprocessor may be found at www.motorola.com.
All connections to the IPm CPU board are made through a single 120 pin connector. The pinouts for this
connector are detailed in an upcoming section. A mechanical drawing of the IPm CPU board and interface
connector may be found in this documentation.
A separate circuit board is required to complete the IPm system. This board must provide various interface
and driver circuits for the IPm CPU board. These interface circuits are described in upcoming sections of
this document.
1.2 OEM Circuit Board Requirements
The IPM CPU board requires external circuitry to run. The OEMs external circuit board design should
include interface and driver circuits for the serial interfaces, Ethernet interface, communication LEDs (if
desired), 3.3 volt DC power, battery backup (for the clock and if used, the static RAM) and a diagnostic
port(if hardware debugging capability is required. These interface circuits are described in upcoming
sections of this document. The mechanical requirements include the inclusion of the mating 120 pin
connector and four standoffs to support and secure the corners of the IPm CPU board.
1.3 CPU Interface Connector
All interfacing to the IPm CPU board is done through a single 120 pin connector. The signals on this
connector are described in an upcoming section and listed in the accompanying table. The 120 pin
connector on the IPm CPU board is manufactured by FCI Electronics. Its part number is 61083-124000 and
is described as a BergStak Series surface mount header. Information on this connector may be found at:
www.fciconnect.com or http://12.30.8.43/fci/datasheet.asp?PN=61083124000&FAM=119
For the OEM circuit board, the recommended mating connector is also manufactured by FCI Electronics,
part number 61082-122000 and is described as a BergStak Series surface mount receptacle. Information on
this connector may be found at:
www.fciconnect.com or http://12.30.8.43/fci/datasheet.asp?PN=61082122000&FAM=119

1.4 Interface Signal Summary
A complete listing of signals provided on the IPm interface connector may be found in the upcoming chart.
Many of the signals are connected directly to integrated circuits on the IPm CPU board. For detailed
descriptions of these signals we refer you to the manufacturers data sheets for these devices. General
descriptions of related groups of signals arranged by functionality and more detailed information will be
provided to OEM designers who license this IPm technology from SIXNET.
