Caution: The Fixed Rack Mount Kit is NOT designed to withstand the shock and
vibration forces that may result from shipping an installed rack mount kit and
switch unit(s) in an equipment rack. Emulex Corporation recommends
installing the rack mount kit and switch unit(s) in an equipment rack at the
designated location where the equipment rack will reside.
Emulex Corporation is not responsible for any injury or damage that may
result from improper installation or unintended use of this rack mount kit.
Contact an Emulex Corporation sales representative for further information
on a shippable rack mount kit.
When installing Emulex Corporation equipment in a rack, give careful consideration
to the following factors:
The operating ambient temperature of rack-mounted equipment must not
exceed the maximum rated ambient temperature, which is indicated in the
product installation guide.
The air flow clearances specified in the product installation guide must be
maintained within the rack.
The AC supply circuit for rack-mounted equipment must be capable of
supplying the total current specified on all the labels of the rack-mounted
equipment.
All AC power supply connections must be properly earthed. To ensure the
integrity of the earth connection, special attention must be given to
connections that are not directly connected to the branch circuit (for example,
power strips).
The rack-mounting hardware provided for Emulex Corporation equipment has
been carefully selected to adequately support the equipment. Any alternate
rack-mounting hardware must provide equal or superior support.

Installation Instructions for the Emulex® Model 355 Switch
Follow these instructions to install an Emulex Model 355 switch unit into a rack.
Step 1: Attach the mounting shelves to the switch unit.
1.
Turn the switch unit over (the bottom of the switch unit should be facing up).
2.
Place the two mounting shelves on top of the switch unit.
3.
Align the mounting shelves screw holes with the switch units screw holes. The mounting
shelves have screw holes that are offset from the center of the mounting shelves. The mounting
shelves should be aligned so that the screw holes are closer to the switch units business end
(the end with the power supply outlet and switch port openings).
4.
Securely fasten the mounting shelf to the switch unit using four #6-32 thread-rolling mounting
screws.
5.
Turn the shelf-mounted switch unit over (the top of the switch unit should be facing up).
The assembly of the shelf-mounted switch unit is complete.

Step 2: Attach the front mounting rails to the shelf-mounted switch.
1.
Align the front mounting rails bracket end with the business end of the shelf-mounted switch
unit. The shelf-mounted switch unit has four threaded studs on each side for installing the front
mounting rail.
2.
Insert the front stud of the shelf-mounted switch unit into the first hole of the front mounting rail
(as shown in Figure 4) and securely fasten one #8-32 mounting nut to the exposed threaded
stud.
3.
Finish attaching the front mounting rail to the mounting shelves by fastening three #8-32
mounting nuts to the remaining three studs of the shelf-mounted switch unit.
4.
Adjust the front mounting rail to the shelf-mounted switch unit as necessary and then tighten all
of the #8-32 mounting nuts to ensure the front mounting rail is securely attached to the shelf-
mounted switch unit.
5.
Repeat this process on the other side for the remaining front mounting rail.
Once both of the front mounting rails are attached to the shelf-mounted switch unit, the shelf assembly is
complete.

Step 3: Install the rear mounting rails in the equipment rack.
1.
Align the rear mounting rail bracket in front of (or outside) the equipment racks rear rail.
2.
Place and hold a universal nutplate behind the equipment racks rear rail.
3.
Insert two #10-32 mounting screws through the rear mounting rails bracket and the equipment
racks rear rail, and screw the two mounting screws into the universal nutplate.
4.
Repeat this process for the remaining rear mounting rail.
Step 4: Mount the shelf assembly in the equipment rack.
With the rear mounting rails installed in the equipment rack, the shelf assembly is ready to be installed
into the equipment rack.
1.
Align the shelf assembly with the installed rear mounting rails.
Required Parts
Rear mounting rails (2)
#10-32 mounting screws (4)
Universal nutplates, three-hole (2)
Note: Emulex Corporation recommends following these installation instructions for the rear
mounting rails, especially if the installation is performed by a single individual. However, the
rear mounting rails may also be attached to the shelf assembly before the entire assembly is
installed in an equipment rack if desired.
Note: The shelf assembly must be mounted using the 5/8-inch gap intervals. The shelf assembly will
NOT mount properly using the 1/2-inch interval. At least 1.75 inches of vertical space is
necessary to accommodate the shelf assembly and switch unit.
Caution: Do NOT fully tighten the rear mounting rails mounting screws at this time.
Final adjustments will be required once the shelf assembly is installed in the
rack.

#10-32 mounting screws (4)
Universal nutplates, three-hole (2)

2.
Slowly insert the shelf assembly into the equipment rack and the rear mounting rails.
3.
Ensure the front mounting rails insert properly into the rear mounting rails. The rear mounting
rail should fit between the curved metal lips on the fron
