Science Building Phase 2 Notes: August 10, 2005

s along Eighth Avenue.
Temporary sewer lines are being completed from the existing building, so
services can continue without interruption. To avoid service outages, sewer
connections are being moved without shutoffs. Weitz notes that the plumbers
earn their money on this work!

Week of August 15:
Work continues on electrical power, requiring two power outages to address both
construction and transformer repair issues at Science.
Rick Whitney reports:
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, the entire building will be without power from 10
AM to 2 PM (approx.). This outage will allow Alliant/Cooper Power to
repair a problem on the south transformer and allow Baker Electric to
connect the new west transformer temporarily to the respective
switchgear.
Tentatively, power for the west transformer will be disconnected on
Saturday, Aug. 20, 8 AM to 4 PM. This affects ventilation, exhaust and
most lighting in the building (most receptacles still live). This outage will
allow Baker to install new conductors and permanently connect the new
west transformer to the respective switchgear.
On the west of the building, work continues along the old tunnel. Power conduit
is being laid (telephone conduit has already been laid), and the tunnel is being
filled. Next week, this work likely will be completed to a point that the
sidewalk by the West entrance can be re-poured.
When the current conduit-oriented activity is completed, Weitz will move its
construction trailers from the new Darby Gym to the Science construction site.
Likely this will occur on Wednesday or Thursday. About the same time,
gravel will be put down on the rest of the yard to the west of Science. This
will give dependable access for delivery trucks through the staging area,
without worry about mud.
Digging and shoring will continue, progressing from the north toward the
northeast corner. When the area is clear, a ladder exit is planned near the
Jacobsons' lab. The door area also will be modified to allow emergency exit. This will serve as an emergency exit until a better scaffolding exit can be
installed. The challenge is to provide a fire exit, while not allowing rain or
other moisture in and while not interfering with work on footings.

Starting next week and continuing for about 3 weeks, 470 "geo piers" will be
installed as the foundational support for the new building. The process
involves drilling a hole about 13' deep, then filling it will crushed rock. The
fill proceeds in stages: First a foot or two of rock is poured in the hole, and
this rock is pounded into place (toward both the bottom and the sides of the
hole). Then the next foot or two of rock is added and compacted, etc. With
the compaction process, there likely will be noise and vibration. Weitz is
aware of the need to complete as much of this work as possible before the
start of classes. Also, an effort will be made to do much of the geo piers near
the building at a relatively early stage, so any noise during classes will be at
some distance from the existing building. Altogether, this work will continue
into the first week or so of September.
Anticipated Service Schedule
Electric: The entire building will lose power on Tuesday, Aug. 16 between 10 AM
and approximately 2 PM. Also, some power will be off on Saturday, Aug. 20
between 8 AM and 4 PM.
Water: An outage is scheduled for Thursday, August 11, from 1 PM to 5 PM.
Gas, Water, Telephone: No outages are anticipated for the week of August 15.

Note:
Plastic sheeting has been installed over
windows in the older parts of the building
near the construction to help resolve
difficulties of dust and dirt. These could be
coupled with the addition of some sound
proofing, although that would prevent any
light from coming in through these windows.
Also, the sound proofing would likely not
resolve vibration -- just sound. Please let
Henry Walker know if you would like to
explore the possibilities for the installation
of some sound proofing in your area.
