Unitex Eliminates Stringy Problem
with Reliable Plastic Strapping
Systems from EAM-Mosca
Who would have ever thought string could be so trouble-
some? According to Peter Curiale, project manager at
Unitex Textile Rental Services, a leading northeast com-
mercial laundry, a few years ago broken string from burst
bundles littered his facilities and caused a maintenance
nightmare. When you have 400 carts of bundled materi-
als a day leaving a facility, with bundles breaking all day,
youre faced with a lot of string, says Peter. Management
had real concerns with the possibility of employees getting
injured from jammed cart wheels locking unexpectedly.
String became so bothersome that an employee was even-
tually assigned to string-removal-duty, all day, everyday.
While minimizing the potential for injury, the string abatement opera-
tion did nothing to stop bundles from breaking open or the tyers jam-
ming. Nor did it minimize the maintenance requirements of the string
tyers. The latter, according to Curiale, was especially common once the
tyers passed their installation anniversary.
According to David Potack, vp of sales and marketing, Unitex Textile
Rental Services has been a leader in the uniform and linen rental indus-
try for over 80 years. Four generations of the Potack family have owned
and operated the company which now serves more than 3,500 clients
throughout the northeastern United States. Unitex operates nine pro-
duction facilities, a corporate office, and a distribution warehouse and
employs over 750. Committed to being a low-cost producer, the com-
pany has undertaken an aggressive capital improvement process to
automate all of its production facilities, believing that improving plant
efficiencies is the best way to improve customer service and contain
costs. Having invested in multi-million dollar equipment to transport, sort,
wash, dry and iron their linens, it was discouraging to have the finished
product mishandled at the end of the production process.
Unitex
gives new meaning to wash day. In their state-of-the-art Mt. Vernon,
NY facility, the company processes just under 90,000 pounds of wash
daily, seven days a week. The location handles uniforms and ancillary
items for hospitals, surgi-centers, imaging centers, professional offices
as well as specialized operating needs of acute care facilities. The new
facility features the latest in tunnel washers, computerized chemical
systems, high-tech moisture sensor dryers, high-speed ironers, bar code
readers, electronic scales, automated folders, a trained and motivated
employee base and nine new Mosca strapping systems.
Thinking the best way to solve a problem is to eliminate it, Peter Curiale
began investigating the reliability and costs of plastic strapping systems.
Curiale had heard about off-line bundling systems as an alternative to
string tying machines from
Dave Finlayson, a regional
sales manager with EAM-
Mosca. Finlayson explains,
While more costly initially
than the typical string tyer,
plastic strapping systems in
general are much easier to
maintain. And the bundles stay
together which is the key benefit. Finlayson also
adds that strapping machines operate at faster
speeds, have no moving arm so they are safer to
use and can be used from either side because they
dont need a safety cage.
Having decided to replace the string tyers, Curiale
researched other major strapping equipment manu-
facturers and brought three systems in for testing.
We had far fewer issues with strapping, and the
Mosca units outperformed the others, says Curiale,
who eventually purchased 17 Mosca ROMP-4 600/
500 units corporate wide. The ROMP-4s have far
fewer strapping errors, he says, They usually get it
done right the first time. Since the strapping ma-
chines only place a single strap instead of the double
string wrap and with minimal misfeeds, Curiale says they are about even
as far as the cost of consumables. They are way ahead with repair and
maintenance cost savings, however. EAM-Mosca Corporation

Linen Bundling Strapping Application
System Information
Key Advantages
ROMP-4 is more reliable than string tyers.
Strapping is stronger than string and can be used in this
particular instance to carry bundles.
ROMP-4 can be accessed from either side since it has no moving
arm and doesnt require a safety cage.
System can be easily moved from one station to another and can
then be locked in place.
Faster application and only requires a single strap to provide a
stronger, more reliable bundle.
Peter Curiale, Project Manager,
Unitex Textile Rental Services, has
been pleased with the switch to
strapping and his decision to
purchase Mosca ROMP-4 systems.
At Unitex, the strapping machines are positioned near folding sta-
tions. At the flats area in the Mt. Vernon facility, freshly washed
sheets are dried and pressed in one operation, and then automati-
cally folded, stacked and conveyed to a Mosca off-line ROMP-4 600/
500. One machine operator moves between three lines, picks up
loosely stacked fresh bundles, places the bundle on the tabletop
and presses the foot pedal. A single loop of lightweight, inexpensive
5mm polypropylene strapping is automatically applied, tensioned
and heat sealed, creating a neat bundle that remains intact. The
operator lifts the bundles by the strapping and places them into
wheeled carts. When the order is complete, the top of the cart is
wrapped in stretch wrap to ensure cleanliness, and simply wheeled
to the loading docks, no strings attached.
The ROMP-4 models installed at Unitex have a 600 x 500 track
opening and feature easy coil loading from machine front, or ma-
chine right on a convenient sliding rack. Other track sizes are avail-
able and options include low strap early warning signals and pneu-
matic compression bars.
EAM-Mosca offers a full line of semiautomatic, automatic and opera-
torless strapping systems for industry. The company is headquartered
in W. Hazleton, Pennsylvania and was founded in 1982. Manufactur-
ing facilities for plastic strapping and systems are located in North-
eastern Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada. Sales and service offices
