As early as age 3, children
identify food brands and ask
for them a fact not lost on
food advertisers who target the
top three channels for
preschool-age children with
brand strategy advertising, says an article in the
October issue of the journal Pediatrics. Based on a
study by Susan Connor, research director at
Clevelands Rainbow Babies and Childrens
Hospital, the article says there are 1.3 food
advertisements per half hour of programming on the
three channels with the largest audience share
Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Disney and
Nickelodeon. More than half the advertisements in
the study were aimed specifically at children, the
majority from fast food chains and makers of
sweetened cereal. Connor and her colleagues
monitored 96 randomly selected hours of
programming from the three channels and coded the
messages as to approach, content, and visual and
textual cues. Results show the majority of child-
oriented food ads take a branding approach,
focusing on creating lifelong customers rather than
generating immediate sales. Fast food ads used
licensed characters to create positive impressions,
associating food with fun and energy. Susan Linn, a
Harvard Medical School faculty
member and co-founder of the
Campaign for a Commercial Free
Childhood, termed the findings
very concerning when childhood
obesity is a major public health
problem.

Pre-school age is a great time for
children to take part in household chores.
They have a natural enthusiasm and
willingness to learn. Having children help
around the house gives them the chance
to learn skills and establish good habits
and attitudes for the future. As young
children become used to helping out, they may need fewer
reminders to get jobs done.
Things to think about when selecting chores:
Each child develops at his own pace: There are no
absolute ages for children to be able to perform tasks.
Watch for clues: Children will imitate you or offer to
help.
Be sure the child is physically able to do the task:
Can he reach the shelf or pour the juice from a large pitcher?
Perhaps you can lower the shelf or use a plastic measuring cup
to pour beverages.
Keep it simple and manageable, starting with one
step: Let your young child push the button to start the
dishwasher or place the napkins on the table. Add steps as skills
develop, like setting the plates and glasses on the table.
Keep safety in mind: Is it hot, breakable, or something
that might cause a fall?
Be reasonable in your expectations, but encourage
participation: A three year old may not be able to do laundry,
but can help put dirty clothes in the basket, help put clothing in
the washer or dryer, or fold washcloths.
Encourage chores that benefit others: Feeding the
dog, bringing a diaper, or picking up sticks encourages helpfulness.
Dont limit tasks to brushing teeth or picking up toys.

When I was very young, most of my
childhood heroes wore capes, flew
through the air, or picked up
buildings with one arm. They were
spectacular and got a lot of attention.
But as I grew, my heroes changed, so
that now I can honestly say that
anyone who does anything to help a
child is a hero to me.

Reminders are needed: Children often need reminded its their turn to
dust or dirty socks go in the hamper. A visual chore chart is one way to help
children to keep track of chores. They can check off whats done and see whats
left to do.
Encourage your childs effort: Praise sincere effort, even when it does
not meet your expectations. Time and
encourage- ment is needed to help your
child master the task. Be sure not to redo a
childs work as this can discourage future
efforts.
Remember to say thanks:
Showing appreciation is vital in nurturing your relationship with your
children.
Young children want to feel useful. Completing chores is one
way of contributing to the family. www.parenting247.org
