REAL CONDITIONS. REAL SOLUTIONS. PHIL BURGE EDITOR
Editorial comment
Welcome to FOCUS 66 in which you will find our special supplement,
FOCUS EXTRA.
Although SKF is well known as the world's leading supplier of rolling
bearings, we are also one of the largest providers of condition monitoring
and maintenance products and services. In fact, in the UK we are the
leading company in this field. FOCUS EXTRA provides you with a quick
reference to most of our condition monitoring and maintenance products.
Inside, you'll find details on a range of items, from vibration analysis units
to bearing pullers and temperature sensors to laser alignment tools.
Back to the regular FOCUS and, amongst the regular product and
news features, on pages 14 and 15 we start a series of articles
surrounding bearings in electric motors and machinery. We kick off with
a look at bearing selection and in future issues will examine some of our
specially developed products in this field.
On pages 10 and 11 we also take a look at extreme temperature
applications, and the problems associated with bearing and grease
selection.
Finally, I'd just like to offer a word of thanks to Nick Brooks, from
our PR company Houston Associates. Nick has provided the content
for FOCUS for the last three years but is moving on to pastures new.
We wish him all the best.

FOCUS 66
The 2003 SKF Innovation Award ceremony
took place in September and saw Peter
Hall and Ralph Newey of Ampep receiving
awards for their work on ceramic-coated
self-lubricating bearings. Ampep, the
Somerset based subsidiary of SKF, is the
first bearing company to successfully
incorporate such a coating in self-lubricating
bearings which provides a very significant
increase in bearing life.
Peter and Ralph were presented with their
awards at SKF's country club in Slottsviken,
just outside of Göteborg. They were among
16 winners from around the world, which
included double winner, Guillermo Morales,
who received the award for both the
SKF Friction Model (together with
Benny Wemekamp) and Pure Refrigerant
Lubrication of Hybrid Bearings (together
with Antonio Gabelli).
The annual awards represent the pinnacle
of innovative achievement within SKF and
demonstrate the great depth of creativity
and technical prowess available to support
the Group's strategic objectives.
Ferrari secured a record breaking
fifth consecutive Constructors' World
Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix
on Sunday, October 12th.
The Grand Prix, won by Ferrari's Rubens
Barrichelo, saw Michael Schumacher take an
unprecedented sixth Drivers' Championship.
At the close of what has been one of the
most closely contested Grand Prix seasons,
Ferrari has again shown remarkable reliability
and a true fighting spirit. Interviewed
immediately after the Japanese Grand Prix,
Michael Schumacher said, "The team is
always fighting and that is its strength. We
are a big family and we can all be proud to
be part of it."
SKF is a supplier and technical partner to
Scuderia Ferrari in a relationship which spans
over half a century. At this year's "Podium
Ferrari" ceremony, SKF was presented with
