The ACWS is a nonprofit organization with the
purposes of charitable and educational activities

guage, conduct and manner of daily living of the
civilian population and military forces during the
American Civil War period (1861-1865) and the

Presidents Message
The Prez prattles...
Another fantastic Calico behind us! Thanks to all of you that made it happen. I
heard our numbers beat last year, and the weather had to have something to do with
that. Kudos to all of my ACWS friends! You took the changes in stride, coped with
the switch in camp areas and, best of all, coped with the loss of the buildings for
overnight use. That was a blow, but there was nothing we could do about it. The
County was adamant.
Really, when we get down to it, the County really came through. They performed
in days what normally takes months to do. Why did all this happen? This is the first
time in all the years we have been to Calico that our contract was sent to be reviewed
by the County. Before this it was always left up to the Park personnel.
A sincere thank you to all that stayed over on Monday. We made a good show-
ing, and I heard the #2 person from the County Parks was there and was impressed.
Special thanks to the Civilian Corps for their teas and stage functions. You folks
add class and beauty to our events.
Speaking of the Civilian Corps the Ball committee out did all for the Ball at the
Mission Inn! Thanks to a very small and incredibly active committee consisting of
Shelley Peters, Sheila and John Smoley and Larry Duncan - the event was without
equal! The ambience of the Mission Inn, the music by the Occasional Strings, the
dances called by Mark Shoenberger, and the food and deserts beat anything I have
ever seen! Plan for this again next year!
Going back in History some more - did you miss the Live Fire? You could have
seen the Washington Artillery win all, and I do mean all, of the smoothbore cannon
events. They have finally found the formulae! And it was simple, they just enter
events that have no other smoothbore cannons in it! This is the most interesting live
fire you will ever attend! The competitions are not just shooting at helpless paper
targets. You have to see this to believe it!
Dont forget the Officers catered dinner when you go. I hear the Washington
Artillery has already planned the entertainment. There is a rumor they commissioned
27 sequined string bikinis in size 44! Shhh - dont tell!
I wish I could have seen more of the dance, but I spend a lot of time listening to
members who want to give me feedback. And not all of it starts with What the
H. Most of it starts with, We want our own ACWS events.
I could not agree more with this concern, so, once again, I ask your help to find
locations. If you have an idea for an area that you would like to see us at, or a service
club or museum you would like us to support, send me an E-mail. If they have a
large enough piece of property, the more the better. You know what kind of area
you like to reenact on. How about green grass, trees, a big battlefield and, most im-
portant, a way to control access so the sponsors can collect ticket money.
We have some great events coming up. The ACWS supports St. Catherines on
March 17 and 18th. The Confederate Commander is our own Shawn Stidger. Let
him know if your unit is coming (deadreb@yahoo.com). The Union Commander is
Scott Harrington (zouave@adelphia.net).
April is still being worked on and May is Wooden Nickel. So check the calendar
out and lets go shoot somebody!
June is Acton and they are talking to us about twice a year. They are going to
open it up to the public as a community service thing (and to sell memberships!) and
get the schools involved. Watch the newsletters for updates on this and start talking
up attending to your mates.
We have a new Treasurer on the board. Sam Frankl volunteered to relieve Ted
Riley. Ted has opened a new business in Brawley and found out it becomes his life.
I know I join the rest of the Board and ACWS members who know how hard Ted
worked. So a resounding THANK YOU, TED for all the work you did in helping
the ACWS. Ted, you are a great guy and when the business makes you a billionaire I
hope you will come back on the Board. (And sponsor an event with all that money
you have!)

Dear ACWS members,
WOW! Best Calico Weekend EVER!
For an event that normally sees our
smallest turnout of the year, we had a record
participation of nearly 400 reenactors. De-
spite this, we managed to find just enough
camping space even without the buildings.
The sea of tents was quite a sight and the
plethora of artillery awed the capacity crowds
all weekend. Even the free BBQ Saturday
night was one of the best we've had! Needless to say, the folks at Calico are ecstatic.
The addition of new regulatory agencies made for a bit of a bumpy run up to the event, but all the ruffles were
smoothed out before weekend and all of you took the new rules in stride. Last minute changes and additions thrown at
us by the County made for some hectic scrambling, but you made it look like it was just business as usual. The good
news is that, in cooperation with those County agencies, we have created the standard for all future reenactments in San
Bernardino County. The better news is, a highly placed official in the Parks system has asked that we EXPAND our
impression next year!
The weather Saturday and Sunday was nothing short of gorgeous and the gate saw record crowds for those two
days. Even with the Monday morning rain, the third days attendance was only a little behind last year's s
