000 peo-
ple, both young and old, fami-
lies and singles, turned out to
share the day of festivities with
us. The days events included
an appearance by celebrity
guest Bill Ervolino, columnist with The Record, magicians,
clowns, the North Jersey Masters, ice sculpting, crafts, karaoke,
caricatures, synchronized swimming by the Ridgewood
Aquacons and delicious food prepared by the YWCAs very own
chef. Without the hard work of our dedicated staff and volun-
teers and the willingness of so many entertainment profession-
als to contribute free of charge, this event would not have been
possible.
The driving force behind the entire construction process was,
of course, the generosity of our donors. Thanks to those individ-
uals, families, outside organizations and area corporations that
supported this project, we were able to modernize our 50-plus
year old facility while adding additional program space and
enhance the experience for our members with improvements
such as central air conditioning, renovated locker rooms, a new
Bolger Fitness Center, the Atwater Center for Children and a
number of features including a new elevator, which brings our
building up to the standards of the ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Association).
The YWCA is proud to highlight these four newly renovated
areas thanks to the generous donors like you:

The Atwater Center For
Children is the 4,634 sq. ft. area
of our lower level dedicated to the
YWCAs infant care, playtime,
after school programs and enrich-
ment classes. The center is
named in honor of Verne and
Evelyn Atwater, longtime support-
ers of the YWCA. The late
Evelyn, a former board member,
was the creator of our TWIN pro-
gram, which became a model for
similar programs held at YWCAs
nationwide. Her husband Verne, served the YWCA in various ways, including
service as a Trustee.
Without the generosity of Mr.
David Bolger, one of Ridge -
woods most generous philan-
thropists, we would not have
been able to create our brand
new fitness center. Our Bolger
Fitness Center boasts 3,000 sq.
ft. of space housing 30 pieces of
cardio equipment and 13 sepa-
rate pieces of strength training
equipment, including a universal
unit and dumbbells. All this, plus

classes slated to
begin this winter.
The Loeffelman and Eaton Welcome Center honors the contributions of
Howard Loeffelman and Bobbie Eaton. Mrs. Eaton, a longtime friend of the
YWCA has served as president of our Board of Directors, was a driving force
behind the creation of our Tribute To Women and INdustry event and
co-chaired our last capital campaign effort in the 1980s. Mr. Loeffelman was
a longtime YMCA supporter and former member of the YMCAs board
of directors.

The largest donation to
our renovation project came
from the Frank and Janet
Kireker family, for whom
weve renamed our lobby.
Mr. and Mrs. Kireker had
been longtime supporters of
both the YMCA and the
YWCA. Following Franks
death, the family made a
wonderful contribution to this
project in honor of Frank and
Janet.

bergen county Friends of the YWCA,
What a happy day it was on Saturday,
January 20th, when the YWCA of Bergen
County and the Ridgewood YMCA cele-
brated the Grand Re-Opening of our joint-
ly owned Ridgewood facility! Five years
ago, the YWCA of Bergen County and the
Ridgewood YMCA launched a capital cam-
paign to raise funds to renovate this building that has been sig-
nificant presence in Ridgewood for over five decades. The
capital campaign dreams began turning into reality when the
construction crews arrived in August 2005. Seventeen months
later, the major renovations were completed, and it was time to
celebrate!
As you will see from the photos in this newsletter, a fabulous
time was had by all at Grand Re-Opening Celebration in
January. The building was buzzing with activities for all ages
face painting, balloons and arts and crafts for the children; adult
fitness demonstrations in the new Bolger Fitness Center; a
guest appearance by columnist and comedian, Bill Ervolino;
and a synchronized swimming demonstration by the Aquacons
to round out the day. Many thanks to all of the many donors
who supported this important project, and to all of the YWCA
members who patiently stood by us during the renovation
process. My hope is that everyone will enjoy using the newly
renovated facility!
As the finishing touches were made to the Ridgewood facil-
ity this fall, the YWCA began looking beyond bricks and mortar
toward programs and services. The YWCA launched a strate-
gic planning process through which board members and staff
have been creating a collective vision that will guide the
YWCAs efforts in the future. We intend to finalize our strategic
plan this spring, and look forward to sharing the plan with you,
along with our new strategies for empowering women and elim-
inating racism throughout Bergen County. Stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Monica Roers
