Information Technology -
High-Performance Parallel Interface 6400 Mbit/s Optical
Specification (HIPPI-6400-OPT)
Secretariat : National Committee for Information Technology Standardization (NCITS)
This is an internal working draft of T11.1, a Task Group of Technical Committee T11 of Accredited Standards
Committee NCITS. As such, this is not a completed standard. The contents are actively being modified by T11.1.
Permission is granted to members of NCITS, its technical committees, and their associated task groups to

this notice is included. All other rights are reserved. Any duplication for commercial or for-profit use is prohibited.
ABSTRACT
This document describes a media-level, point-to-point, 12-channel, full-duplex, electrical / optical interface, with
each channel operating at 1 Gbit/s. Multimode (MM) fiber cables, and single mode (SM) fiber cables, are used for
distances up to 300 m and 1 km respectively when carrying the HIPPI-6400-PH protocol. Other protocols may
operate over longer distances. Differential signals are used on the electrical side.

Comments on Rev 0.7
This is a preliminary document undergoing lots of
changes. Many of the additions are just place
holders, or are put there to stimulate discussion.
Hence, do not assume that the items herein are
correct, or final everything is subject to change.
This page tries to outline where we are; what has
been discussed and semi-approved, and what has
been added or changed recently and deserves
your special attention. This summary relates to
changes since the previous revision. Also,
previous open issues are outlined with a single
box, new open issues ones are marked with a
double bar on the left edge of the box.
Changes are marked with margin bars so that
changed paragraphs are easily found, and then
highlights mark the specific changes. The list
below just describes the major changes, for detail
changes please compare this revision to the
previous revision. The major technical changes
are printed in bold.
Please help us in this development process by
sending comments, corrections, and suggestions
to the Technical Editor, Don Tolmie, of the Los
Alamos National Laboratory, at det@lanl.gov. If
you would like to address the whole group working
on this document, send the comment(s) to
hippi@network.com.
1.
Behind the front cover updated the address
for the HIPPI Standards Activities web page.
2.
In 3.3 added an acronym for O/E of optical
to electrical converter.
3.
In 7.2, the next to last paragraph concerning
mode selective loss was replaced with four
paragraphs supplied by Dan Brown and
reviewed at the Portsmouth meeting.
4. In A.2, added the example calculation loss
example supplied by Dan Brown at the St.
Petersburg meeting and inadvertently
omitted from the previous document revision.
5. In B.1, the example at the end was added
using the text supplied by Dan Brown that
was reviewed and modified at the
Portsmouth meeting.
6. In B.2, changed "...optoelectronic (O/E)
converter..." to "...optical to electrical
converter (O/E)...".
7. In B.2.1, step a added The oscilloscope
should be triggered from a stable trigger
source originating at the data generator.
8. In B.2.1, step d changed electrical
cables to electrical and optical
cables.
9. In B.2.2, step a added The oscilloscope
shall be triggered from a stable trigger
source originating at the data generator.
10. In B.2.2, step d changed electrical
cables to electrical and optical
cables.
11. In Figure B.5, changed the caption 2(a) to
(a), and 2(b) to (b). working draft - HIPPI-6400-OPT Rev 0.7, 8/18/98
