ARC, a for-impact volunteer organization and sanctuary, provides a clean, safe, no-kill environment primarily for cats
and dogs within the Lee County area, and actively seeks their adoption to qualified individuals. Through public
education and an active spay and neuter program, ARC strives to reduce the number of unwanted animals in the
community.
ARC also promotes animal welfare advocacy and cruelty investigations, as well as utilizing education as a major
resource to reach pet owners on responsible pet ownership and kindness to all creatures.
ARC is a tax deductible, 501 ( C)(3) status organization, funded by individual and corporate donations and
memberships, and operated by volunteers. ARCs Barks & Meows is bi-monthly publication.

Making a Difference
ARC Joins Cable TV:
Steven Opauski & Steve Donaldson of Comcast of SW Florida has
photographed and edited our first Public Service Announcement. Aired on over 40 cable channels you are
bound to see this informative tape. Thanks Steve & Steve!
Mike Greenwells Bat-a-Ball & Family Fun Park:
An Easter supply, food, and monetary
drive was conducted for the benefit of ARC. Thank you Mike for your annual support of our residents!
Cape Coral Doll Guild:
The pet friendly guild once again generously gave the proceeds from their
spring sale to ARC. Their beautifully hand crafted dolls once again benefited our wonderful cats and dogs.
What a wonderful group!
ROARING Success:
Animal Planet teamed up with Todd Torchia, General Manager of
Colonial Suzuki, to do a Be a Hero promotion to benefit ARC. A donation was made every time a test
drive was done at the dealership located at 2320 Colonial Boulevard, Ft. Myers. $1,000 was raised for our
orphans, which meant a lot of people got behind the wheel of a Suzuki!
Of Special Notice.
If one thing remains constant in life, it is that things never remain
constant! The strength of ARC has always been and will continue to be
the level of commitment of its Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and
investors. These four groups have always conducted themselves with the
health and safety of ARCs residents in mind.
For eighteen years Karen Holland has been one of the most dedicated of
all. Always a volunteer, often a Board Trustee, and recently a shelter
manager, it was always hard to imagine the day that Karen would step
back and retire. But indeed, that day has arrived. Karen has watched
ARC grow from 9 orphaned in a rented kennel to over 500 orphans on 23
acres owned by ARC. Managing a sanctuary of this size is a challenge
and Karen has carefully mentored two internal candidates who are now
ready to take the reins. Donna Meyer will be ARCs Feline Manager and
Stacy Tester will be ARCs Canine Manager. Both managers have the full
support of the Board of Directors and Karen.
We hope Karen takes time to smell the roses, tinker at things that bring her pleasure, volunteer at her leisure, and then watch the seeds
she has sown at ARC flourish. The best way we can honor all her efforts is to continue ARCs traditions of uncompromising care and
compassion for so many orphaned pets in our community.
Volunteer Spotlight
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and the truth in that has never been more evident
then over the past year. When Sandra Thurman became involved with ARC the face of every-
thing we do was changed. Her ability to capture the true essence of our residents has enhanced
the look of all our
publications and has transformed our web site.
ARC is very fortunate to have Sandra and her husband Ron who together put considerable time
and effort into helping our residents put their best face forward. People now visit from as far
away as Colorado to offer our residents a forever home. Many new guardians visit ARC with a
Sandra photo in their hands exclaiming look at this face...we just have to adopt this one! The
Boris Checks In!
Hi everyone! Having a family from Colorado see me on the web and fly into Ft. Myers
to adopt me was amazing in itself, but get a load of the rest of my adventure! My last
night in Florida was spent walking Ft. Myers beach at sunset and enjoying a good nights
sleep at the Lighthouse (they waived the weight limit for me as a special send off).
Flying in such a large crate entailed a few dismantlings but the flight crews in Atlanta
and Denver were so nice to me! I tried to
give them sloppy kisses but they preferred a
paw shake instead. When we got home, my
new sister, Sandy...a Golden Retriever
showed me our mountain stream and I loved
it! And the next morning I woke up to snow
falling outside! The feeling of it falling onto
my face and covering my body felt sooo good!!
Just wanted to thank all of you for taking such good care of me at ARC and
finding me this great home! I miss you, but am so much cooler and more
comfortable here in the Rockies. Almost heaven to this Burnese Mountain
dog!!!
Love, Boris
