International Rectifier commits support for long-term
technology roadmap development at CPES!

CPES Director, Fred C. Lee, receives $100K from Mike Briere, IRs Executive Vice President for
Research and Development, to kick off the long-term roadmap development efforts at CPES
(CPES Outreach Workshop in Tampa, Florida, October 6, 2006)

One of the invited speakers at the 2
nd
CPES Outreach Workshop held in Tampa,
Florida on October 6 -7, 2006 was Dr. Michael Briere, Executive Vice President for
Research and Development at International Rectifier. His presentation, Global
Impact of Efficient Power Electronics on Energy Consumption and an Industry
Roadmap Initiative for CPES, provides insight into the worlds overall energy
consumption and describes how advancements in power electronics technology could
generate significant societal impact via improved energy efficiency and energy
savings.
In addition, as CPES has demonstrated a successful long term system approach to
power electronics development over the past eight years, IR has committed to
support CPES in developing a long-term (7-15 year) roadmap for architectural,
control, component and package requirements. To demonstrate IRs commitment,
Mike seized the opportunity to present a $100K check to CPES Director Fred Lee to
kick off this initiative. The dedicated funding will cover two main areas of research:
(1) <10 kW motor control systems, especially for high volume appliance applications;
and (2) power delivery for electronic loads, >90% efficiency, >10 MHz, >3 kW/in
3
and < $0.05/W.
As noted in IRs press release on this subject, the roadmap initiative will help
advance the course of technology inside the industry as well as establish research
requirements for CPES by defining a 10-year development path. CPES is excited
about the promise for long-term involvement with industry!
