L-3 Electronic Systems has been engaged in
the design, manufacture and application of
military and avionic display products for
more than 26 years and has fielded more
than 10,000 displays to date. Our displays are
flying on-board high-performance aircraft,
such as the Apache AH-64D, F-16 Fighting
Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt, C-17 Globemaster
III, Hawk 200, EH-101 Merlin, RAH-66
Comanche and F-18 Hornet.
Our display products are based on two
technologies: Light Emitting Diode (LED)
and Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display
(AMLCD). These systems offer extremely
reliable performance under adverse, high-
stress conditions and provide enhanced
situational awareness to crewmembers. They
are configured to incorporate desired
technical characteristics such as speed,
resolution, brightness, persistence and
flexibility, and engineered for resistance to
vibration, shock, humidity, and extremes of
temperature. We utilize commercial off the
shelf products, which are then modified to
suit the stresses imposed on modern
warplanes and the environments in which
they find themselves.
We started building LED display panels in the
mid-70s, and progressed to producing the
highest resolution pixilated LED-based
displays for avionics applications, of which
7,500 have been installed. These include:
Data Entry, Up-front Control, and Warning
Annunciator Displays.
Today we are developing a new-generation
flat panel AMLCD display suite for the
Canadian and Royal Australian Air Forces F-
18 A/B fleets, as part of the Boeing
Companys F18 Multi-purpose Display
Group Upgrade (MDGU) Program. These
displays are referred to as Multi-function
Display Indicators (MDI). The MDI interfaces
with the mission computer, Forward Looking
Infrared Radar (FLIR) system and the video
recorder. Pilot control is via the Hands-On-
Throttle and Stick (HOTAS), or by
push-button switches, located on the MDIs
front panel. The MDI processes the data
presented on its screen and on the Head-Up
Display (HUD), which may be symbols,
graphics or raster video. The development
and application of this technology will help
ensure the mission effectiveness of the F-18
throughout the next 20 years. Electronic Systems

Maintenance and Repair
We support all of our display units throughout their
intended service life and will repair to Original
Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications, to
ensure displays meet their expected high-reliability
criterion. We achieve exceptional turn-around times,
realized by a detailed repair tracking system. This
provides our customers with cost effective, on-time
deliveries.
