Unionville Honors the Class of 2005
On June 10, 2005 family and friends gathered at the University of Delaware to celebrate the accomplishments of
Unionville High Schools 313 graduates. After facing numerous personal and team challenges, this years graduates
have proven that they have what it takes to not only succeed, but excel! Graduate Michaela Cohen told the graduates
that graduation day reminds us and our families of all the things we did while we were here, of the differences we
made and the lives we touched, while still allowing us to rejoice in our own special accomplishments. An in-depth look
at the Class of 2005 individual and group accomplishments can be found on pages 4, 5 and 8. On behalf of the
administration, the Board of Directors, and the faculty and staff, we wish the Class of 2005 all the best as they, as Ms.
Cohen stated, make some noise!
The Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District Transportation Department is
taking a voluntary step towards
meeting new diesel fuel and emissions
regulations mandated by the Federal
Government.
By mid-2006 all diesel powered on-
road vehicles will be required to
convert to the use of ultra-low sulfur
fuel. By the year 2007 all equipment
manufacturers will be required to
produce engines with cleaner exhaust
systems.
Because of a grant opportunity from
the Clean Buses for Kids program,
the Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District will be able to get a head start
on providing cleaner air for our
children, staff and community.
Diesel exhaust contains a variety of
pollutants that have been linked to
health problems for children and
older adults. Children can be exposed
to diesel exhaust both when they are
on or near an idling bus. Exhaust
fumes can also travel into school
buildings when buses are waiting near
entranceways and windows.
The school district has received a grant
totaling $214,411.50 to provide special
particulate filters on 32 of the school
districts school buses. The grant also
provides monies to be used for the
purchase of the ultra-low sulfur fuel.
As part of the grant approval, the
school district was required to develop
an anti-idling policy for the school
Cleaner Buses in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District
districts fleet of vehicles. As part of
that policy, drivers will be required to
shut off engines during wait times at
loading zones and also limit warm-up
time at the start of the day.
The Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District provided transportation
services for approximately
4,500 students to 72 public
and private schools during
the 2004-2005 school year.
The school buses and school
vehicles traveled an
approximate total of
1,300,000 miles.
Transportation on the big
yellow school bus is the
safest means of ground
transportation in this
nation. Providing cleaner
air on and around the
school bus will help
promote an even safer ride
to and from school and
school-related activities.
Shop Foreman Ron Gilbaugh works on the exhaust
system of one of the Districts buses.
The Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District Transportation Department is
committed to safety. More
information about Clean Buses for
Kids can be found at the web site:

End of School Year Brings Memories
and Change
As we look forward the 2005-2006
school year, the Board of School
Directors would like to take a minute
and express its most sincere thanks to
all the teachers and staff who
contributed to a successful 2004-2005
school year in the Unionville-Chadds
Ford School District. Amidst the trials
and passions of workday challenges
and unheralded contributions by
many, too little time is spent in
expressing the appreciation of all
Board members for this collective
effort. The broad community of
district tax payers, not only parents,
also need to be aware of the dedicated
professionals, para-professionals and
support staff people serving the
districts children. With their many
hours of service they have brought
pride and success to our school
district.
The ending of the 2004-2005 school
year was especially unique. Twenty-
five Unionville-Chadds Ford School
District employees took advantage of
retirement opportunities. To all of
them we wish to give a special thank
you for their collective years of service
and dedication. Each of our six
buildings plus the administrative staff
and transportation services was
impacted by the retirements. Many
of us had known and worked with the
retiring individuals for a number of
years. They bring good memories.
They will be missed and we wish them
well.
But with change comes opportunity.
Over the summer we have been
actively searching for and recruiting
many talented new faces. We trust
that they will bring enthusiasm and,
perhaps, new approaches to teaching
and problem solving that will motivate
our district to perform to an even
higher standard. They will also bring
an economic benefit to the district
taxpayers. This expected financial
benefit went a long way toward the
Boards efforts to keep the 2005-2006
tax increases in both Chester and
Delaware Counties below the regional
rate of inflation. This is a first in
the last five years.
Managing and adapting to change is
critical to growth in performance and
accomplishment. We thank all those
who have served us so well both past
and currently and look forward to
positive change in the coming school
year.
