Heart Awareness at Father Ry a n
D
r. Joey Barnett, director of
pharmacology at Va n d e r b i l t
U n i v e r s i t y, visited Ry a n s
advanced placement biology
classes earlier in the year for
a hands-on experience about heart disease.
Each of the A P students donned rubber
gloves and goggles and gathered around Dr.
Barnett as he opened the containers that
held human hearts. While he talked about
the functions of each chamber and ventricle,
the students were able to hold and examine
the hearts. They could see a diseased heart
and the effects of smoking, a high fat diet,
lack of exercise and heart disease.
That experience has motivated the A P
science class to do something about
educating fellow Ryan students in other
science classes. On Monday, February 9 the
A P students taught all of the schools
science classes about the heart. Each group of
four students presented a lesson on heart
disease and the need for Automated External
Defibrillators (AEDs) on the Father Ry a n
campus. Dr. Joey Barnett attended a morning
session and answered student questions.
Junior Ryan Mudry created a web page for
students to use during the presentations. A P
Biology students taught approximately 600
of their classmates about heart disease. T h e y
have created a stir among the student body
and are now raising money to purchase
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
for the school. The staff of the school
n e w s p a p e r, the Moina, has gotten involved
and together with the Science A c a d e m y * ,
A P biology classes and science teacher
Phyllis Adgent have launched the Save a
Heart campaign.
*Science A c a d e m y
Science Department Chair, Phyllis A d g e n t ,
has created the Father Ryan Science
A c a d e m y, a new program to provide a
mechanism for advanced placement science
students to explore and practice the
excitement of scientific re s e a rch and
d i s c o v e ry.
The officers of the Father Ryan Science
Academy for the 2003-2004 school year are
P resident Michael Funk, Vice Pre s i d e n t
Rebecca Kaelin, and Secre t a ry / Tre a s u re r
Ryan Mudry.

O
n Tu e s d a y, March 9, the ninth
graders from all three
Nashville Catholic high
schools gathered at the Father
Ryan Theater to affirm their
commitment to a common purpose,
Catholic Education. Father Ryan freshmen
greeted the ninth graders from Pope John
Paul II High School and St. Cecilia
Academy as they arrived at Ry a n s Center
for the Arts.
In a blur of plaid skirts and khakis, and
after a short time of socializing, 450
students filed into the theater. The idea for
the gathering came from the collaboration
of principals, Jack Langton from Father
Ryan, Hans Broekman from JPII, and Sister
Mary Sarah from St. Cecilia. Aware of the
innate rivalry, they felt the three schools
should consider their special bond and
c o m m o n a l i t y.
Astudent from each school stepped to the
podium to share experiences of attending a
Catholic school. Father Ry a n s Rob Hartsig
spoke about the spiritual environment of
Ryan and the emphasis on self-discipline.
M r. Langton then introduced the speaker
who had traveled from New Orleans, La. to
add his special touch to the premier
occasion. Undaunted by a sea of high
school freshmen seated in front of him,
Mike Patin, a professional speaker,
consultant, former high school teacher and
coach, spoke about Catholic education,
belonging, identity, and faith. With the skill
of a standup comedian, he took control of
the young group leading them in cheers,
l a u g h t e r, and ultimately quiet focus on his
message. Although they attend diff e r e n t
schools and there are many differences, in
many ways they are alike. Patin relayed
personal experiences of the shared
awkwardness and pressures of adolescence;
that God gives us Will and Grace (not the
television version) to cope. You may not
have control over lifes circumstances, said
Patin, but God gives you the power to
choose how you will react. Each of you is
d i fferent. Look inside yourself; reflect on
your personal growth and the possibilities in
your life. However, remember, we have in
common the Sacraments and the power of
the Eucharist and the mystery of faith.
After a short break, Bishop Kmiec
celebrated Mass. Father Ryan theology
t e a c h e r, Greg Walton, directed the folk
group made up of eight students from each
school raising their voices together in
w o r s h i p .
