Setting up RSS feeds in FeedReader
The FeedReader RSS news aggregator is available from
http://www.feedreader.com
. Other RSS news
aggregators are available: OUP does not recommend any one RSS reader and they are installed at the
users own risk. Each RSS reader contains different features and these instructions relate only
to FeedReader.

1. Setting up an individual RSS feed
Step 1 - get the feed URL
Get the URL of the RSS feed you want. For example, the URL of the Annals of Botany Current Issues
RSS feed is
http://aob.oupjournals.org/rss/current.xml
Step 2 - start FeedReader
Open FeedReader (in Windows, either by going through the Start Menu and clicking the FeedReader
icon, or clicking the FeedReader icon in the system tray at the bottom of the screen)
Step 3 - paste in the URL
In the main FeedReader window, click the New Feed icon:
In the New Feed Wizard dialog, enter the URL of the RSS feed and click Next

The title of the feed will appear automatically (if your internet connection is working). Click Finish.
The RSS feed will appear in My Feeds on the left hand side of the screen. Click on it and the RSS
feed will update:
Brief metadata is downloaded for each article: title, first author, abstract (if available), DOI. Click on a
title to read an article. If an abstract is available it is displayed on the lower part of the screen along
with a link to the article online.
2. Setting up multiple RSS feeds
The easiest way to set up a large number of RSS feeds is if an RSS provider supplies details of RSS
feeds in an OPML file. OUP provides an OPML file of its RSS feeds at
http://www3.oup.co.uk/jnls/help/rss.html
To use this:
1. Download the OPML file to your computer.

2. Use the File>Import OPML file feature in FeedReader to import the OPML file.
3. Choose the feeds you want to subscribe to.
3. Automatic updating of RSS feeds
FeedReader automatically checks your subscribed RSS feeds for updates (this is one of the main
advantages of RSS). Settings for this are in Tools>Properties>Appearance:
As many sites wont be updated more than once a day, its best to leave the Refresh default value
relatively high if you subscribe to a lot of sites (every 3 hours in the above example).
If you subscribe to a specific RSS feed that is updated more frequently - for example, a news site - then
right-click on the feed name and choose feed properties
In the Feed Properties window, change the refresh rate to a more frequent value (every 15 minutes in
this example):

When you close the main FeedReader window, the program will stay minimized in your system tray. If
a new RSS feed becomes available on one of your subscribed RSS sites, a box will pop up showing the
latest headlines. Depending on your FeedReader settings, it will disappear after ~10 seconds. If you
want to read a story, click on it.
News sites are updated frequently (approximately every 15 minutes) so are a good test as to whether
your RSS reader is working as it should.
4. If you have a proxy server for internet connections
If youre having connection problems e.g. FeedReader returns a 404 error for URL not found, try
-
going to Tools>Properties
-
in the General tab, scroll down and under misc click Get proxy settings from IE on startup

Exit completely from FeedReader (make sure its not minimized in your system tray) and restart it.
