IPING

Isometric gas piping drawings are required for new construction in all occupancies. Submit to plumbing plan
check for approval.
Gas lines to a single gas appliance, connected directly to the meter will not require isometric drawings. Field
inspector will review on site.
Adding additional gas appliances to an existing gas system will require an approved isometric drawing showing
all b.t.u. demands, appliance locations, all pipe sizes, and developed lengths. Sample gas drawing available
on request.
P.V.C. piping is not approved for gas lines per the 2007 C.P.C. Section 1209.5.4.
Gas lines are not permitted under a concrete slab of a building or a covered patio.
When polyethylene gas pipe is used, Certification by a certified installer is required.

Gas storage-type water heater shall be provided with a combination temperature and pressure relief valve.
Relief valve on water heaters located inside a building shall be provided with a drain, not smaller than the relief
valve outlet, of galvanized steel, hard drawn copper piping and fittings, CPVC or listed relief valve drain tube.
The drain shall extend from the valve to the outside of the building with the end of the pipe not more than two
feet or less than six inches above the ground and pointing downward. No part of such drain pipe shall be
trapped and the terminal end of the drain pipe shall not be threaded.
All water heaters shall be braced, anchored, or strapped to resist falling or horizontal displacement due to
earthquake motion. If a tank is sitting on a platform, the platform shall be secured to the wall or the floor.
Installation instructions must be supplied by the manufacturer, or the appliance supplier. Several methods and
hardware are approved to meet the requirements.

The following are the most common procedures:
1.

Plumbers Tape- Using 24 gauge tape, wrap two bands around the water heater twice, (one on top,
one on the bottom) in alternate directions and bolt to the wall with ¼ x 3 lag screws. The top wrap
shall be approximately 9 from the top of the tank and the bottom wrap shall be approximately 4
above the gas valve on the water heater tank.
2.

Thinwall Conduit- Wrap a single band of 24 gauge plumbers tape around the tank approximately 9
from the top and approximately 4 above the gas valve and bolt the ends of the tape together with a
¼ x 1 bolt and washers. Flatten the ends of the thinwall conduit and drill holes for ¼ bolts, bolt
the thinwall to the band of tape. Bolt the other end to the wall studs or blocking with a ¼ x 3 lag
screw.
3.

Other hardware has been designed and approved and shall be installed per manufacturers
instructions.

Refer to the booklet supplied by the manufacturer with the water heater for more detailed instructions.
