DESCRIPTION:
DuraTemp, 26 series, is a pure silicone enamel for
steel subject to temperatures above 500° F. Above
500° F. organic resins oxidize completely and most
pigments discolor. Inexpensive bar-b-que black
and aluminum paints provide color, but no protec-
tion for the metal. DuraTemp uses a silicone resin
that literally cures to the metal at 500° F. and is not
affected by temperatures of 1200° F. The cured
resin is waterproof and protects the metal when it
cools preventing rusting. Maximum recommended
temperature varies with color from 1100° F. for
aluminum to 500° F. for red and blue. A chart on
page 2 shows the range for the available colors.
DuraTemp is designed for direct application to iron
and steel abrasive blast cleaned to SSPC-SP7
White Metal Blast. However, if the maximum tem-
perature is below 850° F. an inorganic zinc silicate
primer can be used and will provide superior corro-
sion protection. If the painted surface will not be
brought above 500° F. immediately after applica-
tion an optional catalyst, 26B, is recommended to
provide proper dry.
DuraTemps resin system is solvent borne. VOC is
above normal limits in regulated areas, but
DuraTemp is typically legal by a special use ex-
emption. Users/specifiers must check local regula-
tions and secure approvals in advance. DuraTemp
is designed for spray application only. It dries to a
high gloss but drops to a satin when surfaces are
brought to temperature.
USE:
The classic, design use is smokestacks. DuraTemp
is also recommended for incinerators, boilers and
similar surfaces exposed to extreme heat.
ADVANTAGES:
The only way to provide color on surfaces subject
to temperatures above 450° F. and the only way
to provide corrosion protection above 850° F.
White, black and aluminum in stock and pack-
aged for small quantity sales.
LIMITATIONS:
Color selection is limited, see below.
Uniform, thin coats at recommended DFT are
mandatory. Over application will cause failure.
Formulation varies significantly with color. Where
appropriate, physical constants are shown for
White and aluminum, which are the extremes.

DuraTemp
Hi Heat, Pure Silicone Enamel, 500° - 1100° F.
Product ................... 26 series
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION:
Surfaces must be cleaned to SSPC-SP7 White
metal blast. This must be done regardless of
whether or not a primer is used.
Surface and ambient temperature must be +45°
F. and minimum of +5° F. above the dew point.
When painting surfaces that will not be brought
above 500° F. DuraTemp must be catalyzed
and
protected against all water, rain, fog and conden-
sation, for a minimum of three days.
Flammable liquid, take appropriate precautions
especially if used inside a structure.
PRIMING:
Priming is optional.
The only recommended primer is Triangle 929Z
and its use must be limited to surfaces that will not
exceed 850° F.
MIXING:
Catalyzing:
DuraTemp Catalyst, 26B, is added to
DuraTemp base in a 1:7 ratio. The base is short
filled, 7 pints per gallon. A pint of 26B is added. Stir
by hand for minimum 4 minutes. Allow to stand for
5 minutes and stir for additional minute to ensure
homogeneity.
Pot Life:
24 hours when catalyzed. Otherwise un-
limited.
RECOMMENDED THINNING:
Thin after catalyzing using xylene. Reduction varies
with color and method of application. For conven-
tional spray thin to 20 23 sec. with #2 Zahn. For
airless thin to 30 35 sec. with a #2 Zahn. White and
black will require 20 30% reduction; Aluminum a
0 10% reduction. Include projected reduction in
data given to AQMD.
FILM DEVELOPMENT & THICKNESS:
DuraTemp is designed to be applied in two coats,
each with a DFT of 1.5 mils to produce a final DFT
of 3.0 mils. A rate with 3 5% spray loss using
conventional air spray equipment should yield ap-
proximately 325 350 sq.ft./gal.
APPLICATION:
Apply by spray. Conventional is recommended,
airless can work but only with small tips and full
control over film thickness.
Conventional:
Use pressure feed, a pot with dual regu-
lators and a medium-heavy duty production or fin-
ishing gun, Binks 7, 18, 62, 2001 or equivalent. Use
